I know a woman who was diagnosed 10 years ago with MS, but now they found that her weakness was actually caused by Lyme disease. A correct diagnosis is critical.

A correct diagnosis is critical. Indeed. Back in 1996 my Aunt (who was in her late 60s) became very ill- she would only get out of bed for a couple of hours a day, spoke very little, and needed help climbing the smallest amount of stairs. Two doctors could find nothing wrong with her. A third chalked it up to "depression". Finally a specialist discovered that she had an operable brain tumor and needed surgery. After the surgery she was completely back to normal! It was an amazing improvement. She passed away in 1998, but at least her final years were comfortable. Himmiko have you considered Chiropractic help? I threw out my back over 16 years ago lifting a friend at school (we were horsing around- wrestling). After a few days my back was killing me to the point I could barely walk. Sitting and even lying down hurt like mad. My Mom recommended I see her chiropractor. I did, and he told me I had partially dislocated some of the vertebrae of my lower back. For months I couldn't stand for more than a few minutes at a time. But after 3 years of therapy, my back returned to almost 100% normal. To this day I still watch myself not to re-injure it. My thoughts are with you all.

Man-Jas, my thoughts are with you and your wife as well. A diagnosis of MS would certainly be a life-changing experience for both of you. My youngest brother was diagnosed with MS 6 years ago, when he was only 18 years old. Thankfully, he has the relapsing-remitting type, which has a fairly good prognosis if identified and treated early. Not to add to your worries, but your wife does seem to have a lot of the symptoms that he does, mainly muscle weakness in his extremities. Both his hands/arms and his feet/legs are affected. It's the plaques in the scan that sound the most familiar to me. I have seen my brother's scans, and so I know exactly what she means. I certainly hope that she does not have MS, but the good news is that although there is no cure, there are treatments that can be very effective in reducing the number and frequency of episodes. In fact, there are actually some exciting new drug possibilites that are either in clinical trials or almost ready for FDA approval.
My brother is doing very well on the medication he takes (Avonex - Interferon beta) and leads a pretty normal life. The biggest problem with his medication is that he gets flu-like symptoms for a day or so after the injection. Unfortunately, he has to do that every week!
I am currently working on a Ph.D. in immunology (MS is actually an autoimmune disease), and MS is what I want to study once I graduate. So, if you have any questions at all, please let me know and I will be happy to try and answer them for you. I am certainly no expert on MS, but I can do some research for you and explain some of the immunological mechanisms that underly the pathology of MS for you. Hopefully, you will find a neurologist that can explain it all to you in layman's terms, but if not, please feel free to contact me at any time!!

Mon-Jas, my thoughts are with you and your family! My father had an ulcer years ago, but they were able to clear it up fairly quickly, so I hope your mother-in-law's can be healed speedily, too. And I hope Danine gets an accurate diagnosis soon; not knowing can be worse than just knowing what you have.

Indeed, at least once you have an accurate diagnosis, you can start to concentrate on treatment. I hope she gets a favorable diagnosis (not MS!!)
Any new news on your mother-in-law?

Thank you again for all your prayers and thoughts.
UPDATE ====== Danine's Mom was released from the hospital today ...
Danine got some "GOOD" news from the neurologist. The Doctor is considered the local expert on MS ... She thinks it is less than a 10% she has MS ... They will be doing spinal tap to make sure. She thinks it is most likely diabetes. We should know more by Monday.
Thanks again.
