My father bought me my copy of the hardcover Star Wars Encyclopedia several years ago. While it is a great guide with a lot of good (and really obscure) information in it, drawing from all manner of sources included guidebooks, novels, the pre-Heir to the Empire books, the collectible card game, and the Droids and Ewoks cartoons, as well as RPG guidebooks, the volume itself is in serious need of updating. And when I say serious, I mean serious.
The book was published in June 1998, nearly a year before The Phantom Menace was released in theaters. In addition to the three prequel movies, all manner of other material needs to be addressed: the Clone Wars cartoons, the New Jedi Order series and all other books written after 1998, video games such as Knights of the Old Republic and Battlefront, additional card game sets, and all the guidebooks released over the last seven years. The Encyclopedia is a tremendous compendium put together by LFL's own Stephen J Sansweet and covers characters, species, vehicles, planets, flora and fauna, and all different aspects of the Force.
Even the "recently" updated Guide to the Star Wars Galaxy is due for an overhaul; the last edition came out in October 2000! The question is, when will we get new versions of these resources? I know that we've gotten the New Essential Chronology, but that particular volume doesn't cover the range of topics of the Encyclopedia.
The question then becomes...how do we do it? With Episode III having been released, I'd say it's high time for a new edition of the Encylopedia! Do we try to contact Mr. Sansweet through the forums? Is there anyone else at LFL to ask about this matter? The original Encyclopedia was $35, and I would gladly pay that again for a second edition (it would still cost less than most of my college books!)
Anyway, what brought this to mind is a special that was just on the History Channel called Boys' Toys. It was a look at all manner of memorabilia collectors, from Stephen's Star Wars stuff to Elvis collections, weapons collections, Stephen Seagal's Japanese weaponry collections, and sports memorabilia. Sansweet has over 100,000 items in his collection, so he's obviously got all the stuff necessary to do an update!
Anyway, if anyone has any ideas on this, let me know. I'd love to see Mr. Sansweet publish a new volume.
Out.
