the star wars universe in abound in fashions not just focased by the movies alone. comics hold many costume ideas and opportunities to those wishing to think outside the jedi temple. true, we saw varieties of jedi at the geonosis battle, but all those individuals died faster on screen than the stormtroopers during A New Hope. I've only recently found that the Knights of the Old Republic comics hold great possibilities for costumes. People think! You can only do the movie jedi for only so long, one of them days you know you're gonna crave the fresh idea of something beyond the open scrawl of the lucas films. the comics are a world where costumes and people change more times than the plot of a fanfic! what i am wanting are costumes that don't have to be so freaking movie exacta...mesa needin somethin newa..okie daye? need more convicing... check out.... jediencyclopedia.150m.com/kotor.htmlKOTOR supporter i be!!!!!

Wow!.....just found this....
thanks for that link.....I don't read the comics....but have wondered about some of the Jedi I had heard about that live in the comics....it is indeed a great place for new ideas.....however...when doing John Q Public stuff...the John Q's of the world probably would not recognize the characters....

Schph, I agree. Costumes from the EU are best for Star Wars Cons, such as Celebration III. Unless, of course, one doesn't care about being recognized as even in a Star Wars costume.
At an event for the public, standard Jedi is about the only costume recognizable.
I attended a major west coast Science Fiction convention. Even there, some costumes from the films are a mystery to those attending. A woman thought my Jocasta Nu garb was that of a Klingon. Sigh
And the link didn't take me to Kotor. Even searched the page and there was no Kotor. So I'm still curious about the costume.

Jocosta Nu garb as Klingon?? Looks nothing like it.
Most people know what a Klingon's clothing looks like. LOL man that's strange.

Yeah... I had this really cool Aurra Sing costume that I wore the Halloween after Ep I. I went to a "generic" costume party and not a soul knew who or what I was supposed to be! I got 2nd place in the contest... as the "Bald chick with the really big gun." Nobody appreciated my authenticity! To be recognized as a Jedi... ya gotta look like the Jedi in the films! No doubt about it!

I frequently buy the comics, and utterly love some of the wonderful costume ideas found within the pages. I've actually gotten the comics for many years (not faithfully or obsessively mind you) and still have all of my old ones, which include some from the late 70's (showing my age a bit, but oh well).
Not only the comics, but the roleplaying game from Wizards of the Coast also has some brilliant ideas. Excellent sources for new ideas...

Dark Horse Comics has two Star Wars titles going on right now-- Empire (events @ ANH), and REPUBLIC, a continuation of the Clone Wars. This series has many variations of the Jedi "garb". Dark Horse also puts out "Star Wars Tales", which had a great image of "The Dark Woman"-- also had a very ornate Lightsaber. She was one of the last Jedi when Vader found her. Great story.
Though I haven't seen this yet, I wonder what the animated series has on Cartoon Network.

I buy the Clone Wars comics, books, etc. But others that are Jedi/Sith related I get as well. The Dark Woman's costume seems to change through comics as one example. A'sharad Hett's as well is a good one.

Interesting that you mention both Union and the Dark Woman---I had ideas to do both. ;D (Not Mara's wedding dress, LOL; too Earth-like) I've just begun sticking a toe into the pond of costuming (I'm currently working on putting together a Leia outfit from Heir to the Empire/Dark Force Rising with help from a friend) and wanted to make some unique costumes to stand out among, well...all the Jedi, LOL. I'd like to put together the robes Mara wore during her Jedi wedding ceremony, but after reading the rules I'm not sure it would be kosher since her outer cloak is black and her inner robes, pants, and belt are red. I'll have to look into that.

Ahhh.
Love the different costumes from the comics. And I can see why they apeal to many folks.
As a costuming nut...I say go for it. There is nothing wrong with having alternate costumes to wear at conventions and such.
Just be prepared to explain what you're supposed to be to non-Jedi folks ;D
I think the main reason most costumes clubs stick with the movie look, if familiarity.
Most folks can point to it, and go.."its a Jedi."
But heck...go for the alternate costumes. I saw some nice ones at Dragon*Con. Some i could guess were jedi...some I had no clue. But they were wonderful just the same. So dont worry about it being..."kosher."
As long as you have a standard costume as well..heheh..Enjoy!
*heheheh..Still gonna do a klingon jedi one day! *
Just to drive em nuts! ;D
