Howdy again Jade1...
We seem to be bumping into each other a lot today.
Trust me....I know zero about sewing yet managed to make myself a perfectly respectable costume. I sew by hand because I have no sewing machine....someone at work gave me their old one...but it is old and doesn't work real well...so I went back to hand sewing.
I found the web links that Ryss provided ....they are all really good and give pattern numbers... go to our Jedi Assembly thread "Tunic and Pants"....select the "Pants" thread...go to the last page and you will find a post by Ryss Fal-Orran.... she has some of the BEST websites there ....... just click on to any of them and put them in your "favorites"... I assure you...you will go back to them again and again!!
I plan to go to Borders today and maybe get a book on sewing that shows some of the more intricate stuff and hopefully will find a book that shows you how to alter patterns successfully....
If I find a good one...I will post back
Oh yeah...almost forgot... At Celebration II there were probably hundreds of Jedi costumes...no... I didn't see any black leather pants...yes....I did see a variety of other colors.... a muted green seemed to surface a couple times...as well as a muted blue......

Random thoughts: Black leather pants should be fine. Anakin has a synth leather tabbard, and Luke's costume is black, so sure! Purple? Green? Mara Jade wears green as a light Jedi, so I guess so. I believe it was the original intention that all Jedi costumes from the movies and the Expanded Universe are acceptable. But if you want to ask Tanthos just to be sure, it's a good idea. I guess the most important thing is to be recognizable as a Jedi Knight and not Robin Hood, a faerie or an elf! lol!

Yeah, I didn't think of that Xana. As much as I love elves, I wouldn't want to be mistaken for one when I was trying to look like a Jedi! Jade, I think that how you make your costume depends on how close to canon you want it to be. If you want it to be as similar to the movies as possible, then you need to stick with browns, blacks, and tans. What color combinations you pick are up to you, since there doesn't seem to be an offical "uniform" just a general color scheme and several mandatory pieces.........like a robe, tabbard and sash, and of course, a lightsaber! The only exception I've seen to this is the Twi'lek Jedi's costume, which seems to be close to her native costume. Mainly though, she doesn't have a robe, but she still wears browns. An all black costume would be fine too, since Luke wears one in ROTJ. Boots can be either black or brown, and any height. I've seen them low and high, and all different styles. I've never seen lace up boots on a Jedi, but that doesn't mean you can't wear them . Mine are riding boots, which I cut down a little to make them more comfortable to wear. As for patterns, check out those sites Schph recommended and the links on the Assembly site and you should find patterns that work. I got mine from Amber's Jedi Meditation site, and I modified them to work for me. As for fabric, I recommend a 100% cotton fabric. There are a lot of layers, and it can get hot! You can also make the robe out of wool if you want something for colder weather. The pants are really a tan/khaki color, not white. Most people I know, myself included, just bought pants that looked right with the colors of our costumes. It's much easier than trying to make them. And since you only see a small part of the pants, regular ones work just fine. I don't see why you couldn't wear leather pants either, though they may get hot. Don't worry, we won't kick you out!! As long as you don't turn to the Dark Side. I really recommend that you check out those sites, as they will answer a lot of questions for you, and show pictures as well. And of course, we are more than happy to help too!!

I didn't buy any sewing books....I looked them over and to be honest, they didn't provide enough good information to warrant spending $30 or $40 for them. When I sewed my first costume I followed the instructions that came with a pattern I bought. The instructions that come with any pattern are really pretty good!
I went to the fabric store too yesterday and found most of the patterns that were mentioned on one of those websites that Ryss has....of course, the very first one they mentioned...Simplicity 7438 appears to be no longer available. My original pattern was McCall's P432 and it was called either Space Nomads or Space family....it is really an excellent pattern because it gives you a pattern for both the tunic and robe and long gown....I don't think it is available anymore either (I bought it in 1999 when Phantom Menace was released)....maybe you can find a site that deals in discontinued patterns.

Alright I'm new confused and have questions? 1. Are their and hard fast rules on the colors. Everyone is wearing brown how about purple or green. 2 Well, I think a little change is cool. But, here's something from the Anakin Skywalker entry in the STAR WARS Attack Of The Clones Visual Dictionary: DARK KNIGHT The tunics, robes, and cloaks worn by Jedi are honored traditions, but not uniforms. From the time they become Padawans, Jedi are free to dress as they choose. Anakin Skywalker breaks with tradition in his garments, both in their color and their material. His distinctive dark clothing makes him stand out in the Jedi Temple and draws concern from Jedi Elders. So, the tan, off-white, and brown aren't hard and fast, but they are traditional. However, you can see that there is some variation, and some Jedi are quite exotic. Just pick up the STAR WARS Attack Of The Clones Visual Dictionary for a good look.

I think a lot of the earthier green shades would fit right in to the traditional scheme of things, just ship the bright emerald & neon shades, the purple you see in the comics is probably used as a shade or highlight so that the picture isn't boring to look at & has detail. Perhaps you could design a basic Jedi in standard colours and the have a reason to add decorations, like Jocasta Nu's tabard designs (the archivist)I believe that I read somewhere that Jedi healers wear blue (Luminara & Barriss) Just some thoughts. Another thought, it isn't the black that's slimming, it's the cut & fit of the garment.

The Black slimming thing is a really stupid fasion joke thing. I tend to like to be a little rebelious when it comes to clothes. I like to conform but add some originality or diffrent things. I don't know. I saw that their is a pattern out right now buy Simplicity I think any way they are attempting to do a Jedi thing but not 100% also a take off on padma's picnic dress. I think I'll try it for my little Padawan or youngling. The cloak is a bit odd in my humble opinion though. What's the deal with the boots?

I imagine it's easier to trek through snow, mud, water and all kinds of terrain in knee-high boots. It makes sense. Was that your question?

Yeah I think so It's one of those early morning things. I really like the knee high lace up doc's but I've not seen laces and I imagine they would get caught on stuff. But they are very Way cool. I'm headin back to the Jedi temple kitchen Maybe some food will help me foucus.

Bill and I watch the AOTC and in thew Jedi academy scenes saw in background a jedi with a skimpy costume and some various differences. I think the only hard and fast rule is the lightsaber and that Jedi have 'The Force'. Even the robes, you seen them on other beings and aliens on Tatooine and such places. JMD

Bulter Swan wears a pale green oer tunics, tan pants and a dark brown under tunic. She also has the leather tabords too.
Ki Adi Mundi has suead boots that fold over. Another had boots that buckle up the sides.,like some motor cycle boots I'd seen.
Guess what? BOTH Jedi were High Council Memebrs too.;-)
