Seriously, the best thing to do with sewing is take a basic class in sewing somewhere or have a relative or firend who can sew teach you basics. After that, it's trial and error and experience that makes one the sewer they become, whether costuming or normal clothing. Anyone who's in Master class in a masquerade at cons says they've always beeen good-ha!, they had to start just like everyone else, make mistakes and all. A good thing to do is make something out of cheap material you got somewhere and if it works, then make that piece out of the good material. JMD

I absolutly agree with that, along with my favourite saying "Practice, Practice, Practice!" the more you sew the easier it gets, and the faster you get as well.

Hi Nova.....
if you spot this, I am at work on my Hannah Solo costume and will be heading out for fabric for the vest...what is your take on the vest fabric (from ANH)? What fabric does it look like to you?
I have seen all sorts of photos of that vest...in some photos it looks black...and in others it looks blue?
I have the boots....Als-da's friend may attempt the buckle...I will be sewing the vest and the shirt... and when I get the buckle...I will have the leathermaker who did my belt do the holster...and the exciting news....another friend of mine who is a tool and die maker took home my Denix Broomhandle metal replica and a scope that I bought and will be putting those two pieces together for a real metal blaster...then I have some finishing touches to put to the blaster. I have also found the Corellian bloodstripes...but will try to have another friend see if she can duplicate them on her embroidery machine before spending the money to buy the bloodstripes....so I am on my way...but I know it will be months before I can save up the money for the holster....but it is a start.....

I'd say it was black. I really have to get my boss to dig out that disc and download it so I can see the pics that I took at Art of SW at the Brooklyn museum last year. But I think it was black.

from what i ahve read the solo vest is black and also felt, found a pattern here at this site. but if you want durablitly i would suggest a light to medium black canvas material. tatooine.fortunecity.com/swampthing/97/basicslook in the corillian vest , hope this helps you some schph and you other solo costumersas well.

If you want something a bit more durable tha felt that still looks like felt, you could flat line a light wt. wool with a strdy cotton or denim.

I agree....it does look like felt...but I can't imagine them using actual felt....too fragile.....would tear too easily
I will have to bring my book to the fabric store and see if I can find something suitable....

Schph, the truth is, real felted wool, not the craft store stuff that you mostly see, is very durable, it's what really good hats are made from, and in many really cold places, like Nepal and Siberia the clothes are made from a type of felt, but it is very heavy and warm. I'd try the flat lining trick on a light weight wool, or wool look alike.

will look for it....thanks...
I did notice that there is a place that sells them...I am going to request a catalog to see if they mention what there vests are made of. I found a pattern yesterday that can be modified.....and a way to do the bloodstripes myself.... should be interesting...
