Nova I have to start thinking about what I wand to make for Draxxus's coustume. My major prob, Jedi stuff is layered and can get very warm. Draxxus gets warm easily and hated to be to hot. could you sugest fabrics and such. Oh I got mine got some awsome dark green none shinny silk stuf on a rement table like 4+ yards for $2 a yard. and some other stuff was major great deals. He wants something Jedi but diffrent than the traditional style now, he is so indesicive LOL very Rouge theis one.

Sorry to have taken so long to answer this, fabricwise, go for lt wieght cottons, & linens. Or silk linen, but make sure the fabric is a natural fiber. Use linings in lighter weight than the fabric they are lining, On my last one, I used the cotton gauze that you see on Anakin in the scene at dawn after he has the nightmare, it is very cool. I only put in sleeves and a neckband made out of that, so it looks like I'm wearing an undertunic, but I'm not. There is a heavier wt of cotton gauze that you could make a tunic out of. It's very popular in India, which is a very hot country.

What fabric are you looking for? Wool? It should be on sale now, w/ great prices. Cotton, just coming back for spring & summer. Linen, same as cotton. Heavy cotton poplin/denim is a great summer cloak fabric, and has a nice flow.

Bows to the fabric goddess....
Oh wise Nova....
I was wondering if you have a copy of the Phantom Menace Visual Dictionary?......I hope you do....
could you flip to the page that shows Shmi Skywalker and tell me what you believe the fabric is that was used in her costume....especially the aqua-ish under tunic thingy she is wearing....and what her other layers may be? If I can find fabric...I would like to try to make a Shmi.

Schph, I think I do have one at home, I'm at the cafe at the moment, I'll get back to you on that. I love her costume and have thought about doing one a couple of times. Mostly very "SLUBBY" rough looking or hand woven things. They could be wool or wild silk, might be cotton, I think go for the right colours and textures, as the real thing is likely pretty pricey, but I'll keep an eye open here for some similar stuff and give you some costs. Nova PS. Definition: "Slubbed" A theard that in spinning is not spun smooth, but has lumps and bumps of various sizes, it will create a very textured homespun look in the fabric. Wild silk is the Rolls Royce in this catagory, and can cost a few hundred a yard, the poor mans version of this is the raw silk linen weave that I use a lot of. Linen often has a lot of slubs in the weave.

Thanks Nova....
I really appreciate it...as you know, I have been to our fabric stores a zillion times and never find much of anything. However...when I had the Robe workshop at my house last weekend ...one of the ladies said she found a fabric wharehouse in downtown Chicago that has stuff packed to the ceiling...once I know what the name is for the various fabrics...I will try to find the place and see what they have.

Nova...am going out to a fabric warehouse on Sunday....so if you have had a chance to look at Shmi's costume and have drawn any conclusions...let me know....if not...I think I will bring the Visual Dictionary with me and see if the clerks at the warehouse have any ideas.

Yes, I am really looking forward to it. One of the women from the local Fan Force and 501st told me about it...supposed to be huge.....several floors ....things piled everywhere and for good prices....If I don't find something there...then I give up...
Will try to attempt to find fabric for the Shmi costume...and for a more "dead on" fabric for an Obi style....that is my "mission".... ;D

SG, did you know that the "Space Nomads" pattern is almost exactly what you need for Shmi? I bought it for exactly that reason. Give me a call before you go fabric shopping if you can. BTW, Shmi's outfit is a long underdress with an over skirt & tunic that comes to a v-point in the back & with side vents (i think that's what they're called).

Vents would be the proper word. I stand by my original assessment of the fabrics, Go for slubby, handwoven looking, natural fibers, there's alot of texture, but, it's not rough like burlap, it's very drapey, like a fabric that has been washed many times, they probably distressed it as well. Could somebody write me the name (if it's different on the envelope) and # and the pattern company of "Space Nomads" please, thanks.

It's McCall's costumes #2433. I don't know if it's still available or not. I've had it for a few years.

...and the even older number on the Space Nomads pattern is McCalls P432....
and yes....that was the pattern that I was going to use for the tunic portion of the costume...
My friend Sue also had told me last week that Joanne's had patterns for sale for one dollar...I had her pick me up a bunch....there were bits and pieces from a bunch of patterns that could be used and modified for various Star Wars costumes...
