How long should the tabbard be in the back?

That varies, if you are doing a replica, try to see a back view, if you are making a jedi that is what you would call more generic, they can vary from the same lenghth front & back to starting from the obi in the back.

Just to ask another question about the tabbards, should they be cut straight or slightly curved to get them to lay properly as they do in the movies? Some patterns suggest straight while others seem to suggest cutting the fabric in a slight curve. Any help would be appreciated. Also leather vs. pleather for Anakin style tabbards, anyone have any thoughts? Tim

I personally believe that teh tabards are straight but cut where the waist are to give a proper curve. Anakins leather ones definitly have the seam.
As for Leather vs. Pleather...leather all the way baby!

Mine are cut straight but I can tweak them in my obi to get them to look fine. Mine are pretty long too front and back, almost to my knees

My existing tabards are also straight and knee length at both the back and front. The 'curve' you're talking about isn't so much a curve, but an angled cut in the sections so they fit flat to the body without hanging in a straight line. I'm not sure if I'm going to have the new ones angled or just straight. As for leather or synthleather, I'd say go with whatever your budget can stretch to. Personally, I go for synthleather purely because it's has the softness and texture of good quality leather, but at a fraction of the cost. I wear leather jackets most days, but as the costume isn't for everyday wear, I don't think it really warrants genuine leather

I believe that the Star Wars encyclopedia refers to Anakin's tabbards as Sythetic leather

I believe that reference is in regard to SnthLeather as in SnythSilk and several other SW galaxy things and not as in Pleather.

I believe that reference is in regard to SnthLeather as in SnythSilk and several other SW galaxy things and not as in Pleather. No, I just checked the Visual Dictionary, and it actually says "Synthetic Leather surcoat offers more protection than traditional cloth garment" so it is indeed Pleather, not the leather of the Snyth (I only type synthleather as I'm too lazy to type 'synthetic' each time
