Interesting take. I have never seen a Star Wars vs. Star Trek thread that had a real life focus.
Star Wars has the younger fans and will likely continue to rise in popularity. The upcoming 2nd Star Trek movie (in the new series) may begin to close that age gap. We will have to see.
Over the years SW has gotten more of my money....but ST was my first sci-fi love so-to-speak and I am a fan of all the series....and even the not so good movies....sorta.

I remember watching Trek when I was a kid. It was okay - the Tribbles is what got me (hey I was only 3 or 4 at the time, LOL) I grew up watching Trek but it never seemed to intrigue me. All the aliens were humanoid, LOL. I wanted real weird-looking aliens. Star Wars sure gave me that. Anyways. My best friend was a huge Trekkie. But she like SW too.

I see your point about the humanoid aliens on ST (though not all were/are). Still it was the adventure I liked. I grew up on westerns and ST was described, originally, as a sort of wagon train to the stars.

I used to watch Classic ST with my dad on Saturday afternoons. Then SW was released and that caught my imagination. Then ST:TNG aired on TV and I watched every episode on Saturday evenings and was a member of a ST fan club in Albany, NY while in college. What got me back to SW for good was when the local IMAX theatre had EP. II. I went with my then buddy to see that and was thrilled to see Obi-Wan fighting Jango Fett outside the theatre, and realized that SW was "cool" again and was back. I've been in a galaxy far, far away again since then and that was 10 years ago.

ST was the first... I used to watch it with my dad when I was little. I was actually scared whenever they would beam down to a planet! Afraid of the creatures, and that someone would get killed! LOL... but I watched it anyway! ;D

Only the Red-Shirts were in real danger...especially if they were introduced by rank and not name. A happy little Trekism they kept in the last movie.
