I have been lurking and posting for a little bit while working on my Jedi. I think I almost have it where I want it. Below is the prototype for my Jedi. You will notice that it draws heavily on Japanese design (i.e. the hakama). This is a nod toward my Aikido training. Not to mention, they are very comfortable to wear.
This is not completed, but rather is a WIP for a couple of different reasons. So, let me describe to you what you are seeing and what will be changed for the final.
The inner tunic is constructed of natural onasberg with a brown linen/nylon edging. The wrists are actually out to my fingertips, but are gathered along the seam to be wrist length.
The trousers are a simple martial arts style made of natural cotton linen with a bedsheet lining. I will probably be upgrading them in the future, though I might not.
The outer tunic is natural silk noir cut in a Jedi style based on an old Simplicity pattern. It has a seam at the waist and A-line pattern on the lower part of the skirting. You can't really see it in these pics, though. It also has a tuck all the way around the sleeve rather than just at the shoulder, but that is just for my personal tastes.
The hakama is made of the same brown linen/nylon as the inner tunic edging. It is made in traditional Japanese fashion with a couple of minor exceptions. First, it secures at the sides with side-release buckles. Second, the back uses a piece of sintra rather than cardboard or leather to keep its stiffness.
The tabards are made of the same onasberg as the inner tunic, though this is only to show contrast against the outer tunic. They are Obi-Wan style and include a build-in belt around the waist with velcro closure, as well as velcro on them, to keep them in place. They are slightly wider at the shoulder and slightly longer than the outer tunic, and have a heavy interfacing to keep their shape.
The obi is made of raw silk and is a double-wrap with a tie in the front. It has a heavy interfacing to lie flat when worn and not bunch up.
The boots and belt are temporary and made of pleather and vinyl, respectively.
So, what will I be upgrading and adding? Glad you asked.
1) I'll be fixing the inner tunic neckline to close a little higher. Not that I don't like showing off my manly hairy chest, it just doesn't feel very comfortable.
2) The tabards will be a custom design with a full back and built-in hood. Think something along the lines of the Starkiller Adventurer robe, but shorter.
3) I will be including a pair of brown pleather "traditional" tabards in the Obi-Wan style over it.
4) I'll be making my own belt and boots for use with this costume.
What do you think?
Questions, comments, critiques?
