I have the Darth Maul FX saber, and I have to say it's the best for twirling and dueling. It's so easy on the hands and it's a really cool individual hilt when it's in half.
I would love to change the red blade into blue.
ANY advice, comments, tips, links to tutorials, would be greatly appreciated.
I'd like to do this before Dragon-Con in late August.

Well I have three questions before I can offer some ideas 1) Is this a "pay someone else" conversion or a "I'll do it myself" type of thing? 2) Do you want this to continue to be an FX? 3) Do you want it to remain an EL blade or does a LED conversion work?

Leda it might be fairly straightforward depending on what they have done. The later FX sabres started to use a multipin DIN connector inside the hilt (the 3 battery sabres). If you took them apart and removed one of the securing screws and then re-assembled it becomes possible to remove the blade whenever you want by pulling it out. IF the Maul FX uses the same DIN connector then it would be a simple matter to change the blades over. You will have to check online to see if there are instructions for taking the maul apart. www.fx-sabers.com/ has a tutorial on the vader ESB disasembly and their forums *may* contain more advice.

If it would be me, I'd convert the blades to luxeon. You'd have removable blades that won't break while dueling and you get to choose the color... there are tons of way to make luxeon sabers out of FX, one option is with UltraSWgeek at www.ultrasabers.com(hint: from his page, go to ForceFX sabers, the last item is "UltraFX Upgrade Force FX Sabers" where you send your saber and he upgrades it for you - the cost for a maul is 100$) note: I'd like to see a Master Maul blue saber

Thanks for the links, guys... I'll have to take some time to go through all the information there! Well I have three questions before I can offer some ideas 1) Is this a "pay someone else" conversion or a "I'll do it myself" type of thing? 2) Do you want this to continue to be an FX? 3) Do you want it to remain an EL blade or does a LED conversion work? Well, if I find that it's too difficult for me to do myself, I will pay someone, but I'm going to see how far I can get on my own---- without causing pemanent damage to the lightsaber, of course! Ideally, I would like it to remain an FX blade. Which means I would then need a blue blade to replace it with... or I have heard that the red blade really has blue LEDs. If that's true, then maybe I can replace whatever filter is making it red.... probably easier said than done! The Maul uses 3 AAA batteries, which means it's likely the multipin DIN connector that you mentioned Jeffrek. If I mess up the FX blade, then I'll go with the Luxeon. It would be convenient to have the blade removable.... and I assume I'd still get the sound effects...

Affermative, if you convert to Luxeon, the only thing that change is how the blade works. the saber usage and sound module is the same. I remember a little while back I saw someone selling actual MR blades on ebay - I think it was someone who actually converts MR to luxeon that had extras of the MR parts. I was tempted to buy the lot as it can be convinient to fix everyone's sabers, but I didn't. Maybe you can get lucky and find the same deal. Also, I'd look with the places that converts to luxeon if they have electronics for sale. alternatively, you could pass to another blade system. I know "hyperdyne" have led-based blade systems, but I have been told their "hyperblade" have 2 blind spots. Also, saw some of his posting on another forum and he seamed rather arrogant, but here's the link www.hyperdynelabs.com/hyperblade/main.phpIMHO this is way too expansive. the best way in my opinion would be to find 2 sith costumers with Anakin sabers to convert to red, and exchange your red blades for their blue ones.

Guess what I found for you on ebay? A lot of FX blades you could reuse to your sabers! seek ebay item 6638044090 this is just the ledstrips with foam diffuser - you'd need to buy 2, but it might be a good way out. Ion Saber was the same seller who sold a lot of complete FX blades a while back. She does conversion to some other system and I guess the superfluous FX material is available for you to get.

Cool... checking out that ebay auction, and customsabers.
The Borders Book store near me has 1/2 Maul sabers for $99. I think I'll start with that.

After evaluating all of my options, I have decided to go with a conversion from Ultrasabers... particularly because I met Todd at Dragon*Con and we discussed it. Time is a factor for me... and as much as I would love to try it myself, I probably won't get to it for a very long time! I'll let you know how it turns out!

Your post really made me think. I would love to convert my FX Ep.III Anakin saber with the ultrasabers conversion kit. But the only problem I could think of is that I will lose the power up and power down effect of the blade. Does anyone know if this is true? I know Leda that you talked to him and I would just like to check because if everything stays the same I would love to place an order next week. Thanks for any help.

Ah great, thank you so much for that info. I was worried that I would lose that effect if I switched over. I guess I didn't notice that about Luke's saber until you said that.
I have the AOTC Anakin FX saber and that is how it turns on but it is also a EL blade. I would love to be able to detach the blade and feel safer about dueling with it but I don't think I want to lose that power up and down effect, to me it kinda completes the saber and with out it it just doesn't feel right.
But thanks for that valuable information 2saberjedi it helped me decide and saved me money ;D. Thank you and

The power up, power down effect is created using a series of LEDs, and the Lueon, I believe it is just one very powerful LED in the hilt. So, yes, you would lose that effect, but the sound would remain.
