I forgot to say negatively charged gravitons... It would essentially be a forcefield, but shaped by the focussing crystals into a linear steam. The effect would be that of a forcefield, and have repelling qualities, without the effects of say magnetic repulsion, this would only repel things actually coming into contact with the blade. The theory is admitedly based on Star Trek technology, but it's at least plausible Nothing bugs me more than the phrase "pure energy", because it is so wide ranging, it could encompass any form of energy, which leaves it completely open for writer's licence. If it was defined as a specific form of energy (gravitons being the most likely) it would at least be a) explainable, but b) limited to specific feats, not just capable of doing anything ;D

thanks I hadn't seen that. The book I just got about the Science of SW discusses the possibility of a lightsaber blade of Plasma....it has unusual properties that might make it fit the bill.....only skimmed it though so far, too much else to read this week.
Humans have an unbelievable propensity for stupidity and a neverending capacity for brilliance. This is the key to their adapability and survival.
Nothing can be accomplished until you accept the possibility of failure and the consequences of inaction.

Maybe the power cell uses an electric current to ionize gas to make it a plasma, and the current is fed back into the cell via the power field conductor. Or since quartz is used in resistors, maybe the crystals convert the electric energy to heat energy.

Ok onto the graphic of the light sabre. Hhumm. From loooks of it, the stuff around the battery must be some sort of ceramic material ment to disiapaite heat. What it's made of, maybe it's a cermaic substance.
Actually, according to my research that would be the power field conductor, which I believe would channel the energy back into the power cell.
