How are Jedi food pellets supposed to work? Are they silver, gold, etc. containers of rations? Or are they completely edible, metallic exterior and all? Either way, I suppose one could call them "Jedi Chow." ;D

I would think that they would open up and have a food content inside of the capsule.

I always figured the pellets were inside the capsules. Like some kind of concentrated food.
I can't help thinking about old Warner Brothers cartoon where they have food pills that they add a drop of water to and get an instant meal.
I'm sure that's not how they work, but that image is ingrained in my head.
Is it mentioned anywhere in any books? I haven't read all the prequel era books yet. I had heard there was a mention in the novelization of Phantom Menace that during the meal at the Skywalker hovel that Qui-Gon suppliments the meal with some of his food pellets, but I haven't read that for myself. And I don't know how there were used there, if so.
Maybe someone else can corroborate this.

I would imagine it would be a concentrated food ration inside the capsule itself.
Since the Jedi may be on extended missions where edible food might not be readily available (and since Republic credits might not always "do fine" to buy food) the food capsule would be able to sustain their nutritional needs for several days.
This isn't far off from reality- the US military is experimenting with "dermal food rations". It is a patch that attaches to the soldier's skin slowly releasing caloric and vitamin needs. Basically it would be used on an extended covert mission where the soldier must be able to move quickly, will not have time to have a sit-down meal, and will not have room in his kit for rations.

The rest of the scene was cut.

Yes, I suppose the silver, gold, etc parts are just the containers and the actual pellets are inside. One thing that's implied by them, to me, is that a Jedi is always expected to be able to find water. In civilized settings, getting a glass of water would be trivial, but even in basic survival terrain, I assume that a Jedi would be able to use the Force to locate a source of water. Since they rely on it to deflect blaster bolts and dodge huge monsters, finding an underground spring to complete a meal of food pellets would be basic. I suppose some of the pellets could be for water purification, possibly one of the color codes for capsules?

That's a level of detail about which I've not thought!

Yeah, but it's unlikely that if you add water to the pellets it would materialize into anything that looked very appealing. I assume that "adding water" means eating them with water.
I remember the cartoon food concentrate thing, but the pellets remind me more of the "space" food that the astronauts got in the 1960's. The press made a big deal about how small and concentrated their food was. But I never heard of it being offered commercially (like MREs are today) so I doubt they were very appetizing.
Now, we can always wonder what the food pellets taste like.

I think if I had to create a background story for the pellets, it would be the color coding thing you motioned, like gold could be water or something like that, and that silver could be some sort of food, but not like the water poofing method but something kinda similar, like those dinosaur sponges that you add water to and they get bigger, and the brass colored ones could be like a nutrient addition, so the Jedi get all the nutrients the actual food doesn't offer. But hey that's my little background story, and it works.

I always pictured the bottom cap screwing off and small pellets pouring out into your mouth. Kinda like a tube of small candies or something! lol!
Couldn't be my sweet tooth talking....
Rubies seems to think they're tiny hot dogs....

I have a theory which have been brewing in my mind.
Not sure how many people here know of a Japanese Anime call 'Dragonball Z', but in it a corporation known as 'Capsule' manufactures tiny, lipstick size capsules which can compress anything into it and be carried around. When I said anything I mean from a small house with 3 separate sections, each the size of an igloo, to full-size vehicles, light aircraft, a truck load of weapons, to a full-course meal complete with tables and chairs.
Now I'm not suggesting Jedi food capsules are as sophisticated, but maybe it can be something along that line? Maybe the bottom of a food capsule does screw off, and there's a compressed tube of organic matter inside which when combined with water expands into something resembling today's military rations that comes in those vacuum wrapped silver packets?
Not very tasty but at least you could live on it...

The food capsules on Rubies costumes are so mis-shapen that they do look a bit like hot dogs. Someone posted a picture of the costume on another thread and they really stand out as the worst feature on the belt.
Those capsules from "Dragonball Z" sound like mini-TARDISs! No, I don't think that the Jedi have that much compression available to them. But I do think that the most efficient way to use the pellets is to eat them and then drink water. No utensils, no plates, no napkins.
I guess the next step in costume technology is to come up with food capsules that you could actually put something into, and still be dishwasher safe. But that's just idle speculation.
