I am going to make some Jedi food capsules for my costume, and I am wondering how they are made. There are only two words I know have anything to do with them: "rollerball pens". I know these are used for the main body, but what is used to plug the bottom of the cap? And where do you find them? and what do you paint them with?

HIya' Toba, Well, my food capsules are from Steadliueter rollar ballpen caps.
Materials:
Steadlieter Pen caps.(i have NO clue, I found mine online.)
Sandpapaer
Hemispheres 7/16" I think*Dealies at the glued tothe bottom on the pen cap. (I found 'em online)
Paint: Krylon(Found in any craft store-Micheal,s Hobby Lobby, Benjamine's etc.) Colors Primer Gold Silver Gunmetel grey Copper Clear-Matte finish If you want I can snail mail a bunch of the hemispheres to ya'. I only needed a few of them and I've a LOT left over. I epoxyed mine on the end of my pen only cuz i hadn't superglue :-)
You'd glue your hemispheres on first, let 'em cure a daay or so to be safe.
You have to ruff up the pens with sandpaper before painting 'em. Do the primer. following the directions on the can. Then paint 'em. I'd use a grey primer, a friend loaned me a rush color. In my opinion rust doesn't cut it, Cuz whos gonna have food caps around so long theyd rust huh?
Spray even light coats. making sure each coat of paint is dry COMPLETLELY before applying the next. Let 'em dry and cure a while, maybe a day. I'd put a clear coat of something on 'em. Maybe a matte finish of clear, so they'd not rub off on your belt.
Does this help?

I does help some. I am wondering if you can get any type of pen caps that work and aren't the special ones, because I've heard they are not the cheapest pens.

<Shrugs> I don't know, unless you find some that have the same shape and the metel clip. Some have found them for 50 cents. Others ahve used a differant pen cap. Just don't use ones that have the plastic clip. It'll break.

The only other alternative that I come up with are Sharpie marker pens. The cap could pass for a Food Capsule, and the plastic clip is not brittle, but flexible that it stretches instead of breaking. This involves the following:
Hacksaw blade, fine grit sandpaper (000), grey or black primer, "superglue" (Duco Cement, Crazyglue, Zap-A-Gap, etc.). Silver, gold, brass metallic paint.
1. Take cap off and put it on bottom end. Mark where cap is on snugly. 2. Take hacksaw blade and cut end off. 3. Glue cut end off into cap. Alow glue to dry for 1 day. 4. Take fine grit sandpaper and gently rough up surface. 5. Take gray primer (black is better if you want a really metallic look). Wait a day for primer to completely dry. If primer isn't completely dry, then paint will flake off. 6. Evenly coat "Food Capsule" with metallic paint of choice. After a day of allowing paint to dry coat with a matte finish clear sealer and wait another day. 7. Wear Food Capsule proudly!
NOTE: The primer, paint, and sealer work best in a warm place (read directions on can). Aerosols are noxious. DO use in a well ventillated area ( I know this from experience) because you WILL get woozy from breathing in too much. Consider wearing a paper dust mask. This is my next project. I'll try to borrow a digital camera to photograph the different steps.

I got some other pens yesterday for the caps. They are pretty good, but they stick up above the top of the belt. Is this normal?

Mine don't show to far above the topof the belt, They fit flush. But if yours are above a tiny bit, that's ok.:-)
Did my instructions help any?

I painted them yesterday. I did'em in gold and used primer first. I have one problem, which is that they stick up over the top of the belt by about 0.5 inches . How could I fix this?

Schph, I've had the paint peeling thing happen too.
take it of therest of the way, then ruff them up with a 240 grit sandpaper. Repaint with a 2 or 3 coats of primer. Let dry completely waiting a day between coats. Then repaint 2-3 coats of the color you wanted. Wait a day between those coats and finish off with a clear coat to set it. I think someone said mate finish but I'm not too sure.
I say to wait a day between each coat of paint so it can cue and not peel off so soon.
I HOPE that'll solve it.

i too have been looking for the pen caps with no success i read somewhere to there was another model of pen that worked well it was Le Bouton model #2620 that can be found at walmart but i didnt see any so i was going to try staples as far as what you people are saying with the wearing problem it sounds like its poor adhesion i agree with Mynn that you need to get the surface ruffed up 240 is a bit course to me just my knowledge from body work i would use 320 and a red scratch pad after you know those things that look like what you wash dishes with

the paint isn't actually peeling off...but rubbing off...when doing some painting on a blaster I used the primer/paint/matte finish technique but found that on the "metal" paints (like silver) the clear matte finish has a way of bleeding the color.....the clear matte worked great on the flat black....but not on the "metals"...

ah thats cause of the high metallic in the silver or gold we tend to have a "modeling " problem with cars too the clear want to move the metallic even if you wait a long period of time you get these slightly blochy patches so sounds like the same is going on there for you as you well know the stuff they but in a spray can is not as good as what we put on a car Schph less hardeners if any

Yep....that pretty much sounds like it. I took a scrap piece of pvc to check the "run" of the metal paints when you try to put a clear matte finish on them...and it turned out pretty grim looking.
