Mine was my first belt as well. Trial and error does seem to be the best way to learn with this sort of thing. It seems that this vinyl belt thing is a bit of a touchy subject with some, dosen't it?

I'll give you details about mine one of these weekends. right now on campus I don't have my jedi stuff so I can't really give you pics to go with the explanations. I have used vinyl a lot before on assorted costumes including jedi belts and my ulic-qel droma sholder armor. also I've used it for my tusken bandoleer, mask, pouches, and a friend's jawa bandoleers. some would say I'm experienced with it . I can tell you this much - it retains heat easily since it doesn't breathe at all. it's stiff to work with it's hard to glue it gets sticky when you spray paint it but - it comes in a multitude of colors its mostly easy to work with it is paintable with acyrlics it's sewable on most sewing machines I recommend sewing it inside out into a tube for your belt so whatever fuzzy side you may have is safely stowed away. after you have your tube turn it rightside out and sew a small strip along the edges to make it lay flat. like I said, I'll show you pictures of mine and how I did that and my sith belt but as of right now it's out of reach. edit: here's a pic of mine before I changed the greebles:

OH WOW! That looks so good!! Was this one your first attempt or one you done after some practice?
Makes me wish I knew how to use a sewing machine. maybe some day mine will look this good.

Some people object to leather, but others worry about the effect the chemicals used in vinyl production have on the environment and/or human health. So, you will find objections on both sides of the coin... Personally, I have a leather belt and have thought about vinyl tabbards... so I guess I have no opinion either way....

that was my first attempt at making a jedi belt but not the first time I worked with it. first time I worked with it was for making my ulic qel droma costume.

Some people object to leather, but others worry about the effect the chemicals used in vinyl production have on the environment and/or human health. But leather still has to be torn from the carcass of a once-living animal, then treated and dyed, etc... Anyway, as a long-term vegetarian I object to using animal by-products as a matter of principle... ;D I accept that other people have different views!

Yes, I was trying to say that people have differing opinions, not that either one was more valid than the other. I looked at vinyl for tabbards and possibly pouches, and passed... in my opinion it looks cheap and tacky, and smells bad. I prefer the look and feel of natural materials. You can describe it as being "torn from the carcass of a once living animal" to try and make people feel bad, but I doubt you're going to change very many opinions with that sort of inflammatory statement.

Sorry, I'm not trying to make anyone 'feel bad' or 'change opinions'! I'm just stating a fact - it may be an 'inflammatory statement' to some people, but that doesn't make it any less true. I don't want to turn this thread into the 'moral rights and wrongs' of leather versus vinyl. Force knows there's enough conflict out there in the 'real' world! My vinyl belt has no smell at all, by the way! Can we still be friends?

You might want to check with the seller, I got an Obi-Wan belt from him a year ago and it is definitely real leather, I can tell by the smell... Although he may have changed in the last year... keep in mind that English is not his first language so it pays to clarify things with him...
