Jay Tee, I'd tend to say like Tenric, the key is to properly sink your led. On another hand, if your heatsink actually touches the metallic outside of the saber, it will help dissipating the heat. But after testing with my 1W saber for about a year, I'd tend to say that it isn't much of an issue with a good heatsink. My next saber should be using one from www.thecustomsabershop.com that I believe will be great for that purpose. my concerns with a rubber inlay between the outside and inside of the hilt is with rigidity. If you want to duel with the saber, it might be unwise.

Greetings Olos Nay & All Jedi [bows], Since C4 is coming up quick, I have re-focussed my energies on my Jedi Knight outfit. A friend has already said yes to building my robes, tunic (the "soft goods") part of the outfit. Another fellow Star Wars fan has said "yes" to building a custom belt for me. I still have to worry about boots and, of course: my lightsaber. Thus, a question. [But first, an anecdote.] On Halloween 2005, I met a ROTS Anakin costumer in Waikiki named Damon. He had what I believe was a Master Replicas Force-FX Anakin saber. What I thought was super cool about it was that, when he turned it on, the blade "grew" from the top of the hilt to the end of the blade, giving it a very true-to-the-films look. I am wondering: If I get either an EL or Luxeon blade set-up, will they allow my saber to have that same kind of "growing" effect as well, or is this effect ONLY found in MR Force-FX sabers? This is just one of the factors I am considering before making my final choice on a saber. Any advice / input would be appreciated. May the [Good Side of the] Force be with us. I had the same question.
Since the FX blade is a series of leds lighting up in a sequence, I don't believe that effect can be achieved with a single piece of el paper or wire, or with a single luxeon in the hilt. But maybe you could make one with a series of el paper strips or something... I'm not sure if it would work, just an idea.

Corbin's LED Blades seem to give that effect, at least from the videos I seen you might want to ask some one who has one for sure.

yes Corbin's LED driver/controller does allow for a graduated lighting effect. it looks rather good from what I have seen.
now ERV over at TCSS (plecterlabs in France) has a new board that ROCKS!!! it manages sound (which is customizeable), light effects, and shock sensors in a complete package.
either one will give an extension/retraction effect of sorts.....chcek them out and watch the vids to see what they can do.
keep in mind that they are good but not like having a sequence of LEDS in the blade....these boards are intended for removeable blades and duelling....FX blades are not.

Leda, Johann & Tenric, Thank you for responding so quickly! I appreciate all the feedback. Tenric, Where can I check out vids of "ERV over at TCSS (plecterlabs in France)"? That new board sounds great (figuratively) as well. I'll browse the internet to see if I can find some sample vids of these saber components. However, if you have any specific sites you recommend, please share the links! I would be most grateful. May the [Good Side of the] Force be with us. Jay Tee www.rebellegionhawaii.com

For those who are interested to know, and being that there are links to his former website, Corbin Das from corbinscomponents has merged with the custom saber shop. You can get pretty much all you could get from corbin there, plus the TCSS specific products (wich are great IMHO) here's the link. www.thecustomsabershop.comto further complete what vortextwist said, the MR blades are literally a collectible, while us Jedi are in seek for a prop - something you can use and carry around. The luxeon blades are more fit for our needs - brighter (for daylight), removable (for costume) and without electronics in the blade itself (for duels).

Does anyone know if CSS or someone else will install electronics in a hilt that you already have?

I'm not sure, Tim from TCSS might for a fee, you would have to email him with what you have and want. but maybe someone is close to you to help ya out. where you located.

Is the Luxeon led able to appear to emerge from the hilt, or does it just fade in/fade out?

the led itself can't, and I don't know that it can give the same rising and lowering effect that the MR's do. from what I have seen of Erv's board, it gives that illusion but not as distinct as an MR. hope this helps.

Leda, on its own the led fades in and out. When used with a normal MR blade diffuser or one of Ultra's blade the effect is minimal at best. However used in conjunction with the blade film Corbin and Erv use in their blades it creates an optical illusion of the extension/retraction. Vortex is right that it isnt as distinct as the effect is gradual rather than in 6 sections but its a good compromise.
One of the things that helps the illusion is the sound though. I have a couple of MR sabres, several luxeons using Corbins drivers and also one of Ervs new 'buttered toast' boards (Crystal focus) so I can compare directly. The technique and materials used for extension and retraction of Corbin's and Erv's are pretty much identical. However as Erv's also plays the sounds in sync with the effect it feels more 'real'. The sounds add to the experience and effect. Same way that if you disable the sound on the MRfx's the effect doesnt seem half as good.
