I was watching the special features on the ROTS DVD and I noticed that they made some stunt sabers out of a soft rubber. Anyone think this would be a good saber for carrying around to the conventions and what not. Thoughts?

If you can chrome plate like the stunt sabers they were making, it shouldn't be that bad.

If it was solid rubber, then it might be heavier than some hardware sabers or the professionaly done customs...

Very interesting, I did not think about weight issues. I suppose on the set they had hilts for every needed situation and the rubber ones were probably to just keep the actors safe then.

Yeah especially from rolling around.
Also with rubber you usually have to cast a master as well, its pretty expensive...

I'm just thinking why would you want to? At a convention, you'd want to look your best, and chances are a rubber saber would just look like a toy or at best a PVC saber, surely you'd want to be carrying a metal saber that actually looked real?

Yeah thats because they chrome plated it...another expensive production. Its not a horrible idea, but the costs to get a master saber made to cast and then cast in rubber and then chrome plate you are looking at a few hundred dollars easy.

Plus its not like that sort of thing is readily available. You can't exactly go down to your local shopping mall for rubber casting and chrome plating...

Ah, no need for pricy chrome plating...say hello to my little friend: Aluminum Tape; looks like polished steel, available at your local hardware store, and costs about $4 for a 10' roll. Best of all, completely flexable.

Oh, though, I wouldn't want to take a rubber saber to a convention...it really is much heavier than the conventional lightsaber. I would reserve the rubber for fan film stunts and cheap (relatively) display models.

I know this isn't on the subject but does anone know what thread it is that was talking about lightsaber grips and had a pic of a handle off of a motor cycle or something I am trying to find it.
