circular point being made............ The sabers from randomsaber are designed by the individual and are thus quite personal in nature. As are those made personally as noted above. The one I designed has just as much meaning to me as the ones I have/plan to build. They all come from what is "me." Now If I had my own lathe that would be different.....just like Metal shop in HS.

I know.. iI really want to make my own too. But even still I don't know what to get .. I mean I know where.. *confused* Mabey if I was with one of you sometime and could take me to go and help me pick parts out for my first one.. that would be better for me.. I need someone to teach me for the first time around and then after that I can do it. It's just the way I learn things Distance pretty much prohibits me from accompanying you on a parts hunt, but if you like, PM me with your ideas for a saber, and I'll think of the best and easiest way to achieve it, with minimal tools (hacksaw, dremel (or generic copy) and some small hand files) and then I'll write you a 'recipe' of all the pieces you'll need, the best places to look for them, and a step-by-step guide on making the saber section by section, which can then be put together to make the complete saber As Olos Nay said: Now... when you buy it somewhere, its kinda neat as a toy, but that's it. when you build it (the real path of the true Jedi,) then you are really proud of it. It makes a more interesting conversation piece.

Do your research, look at as many photos of other people's sabers as you can until you have the basic understanding of what makes up a saber. Read as many lightsaber tutorials in as many websites and forums as you can
Then goto your local hardware shop and just go crazy! Buy anything and everythint you think you can use to make a saber. Start with some lengths of PVC/copper/aluminum tubes of different diameters.
Go home and experiment. Let your imagination run wild!
That's how I came up with my first hardware saber(except for the Graflex clamp):

I found the Sabers from the big yellow box site to be wonderful as a quick class in sabermaking. The instructions are first class and the various styles use different techniques and comprise enough variety to make me feel like I know what I'm doing....or at least what I can do. give them a look see...... www.bigyellowbox.tripod.com

There are pretty good lightsaber tutorials around... can you learn from a tutorial?
I doubt you'll come around montreal only to learn to do a lightsaber... ;-) Where are you at? There might be jedi masters in your surroundings, and I am certain they'd like building sabers in group.
I agree about the big yellow box. Its been there for a while, lots of people refer to them. I took Ideas from them before. You should visit them.

Plo, Tenric and Olos have all pretty much summed up everything with regards to online tutorials, referencing and materials The only thing I forgot to mention earlier, is weigh the costs (and time) of paying Random Sabers, or simply buying the materials and tools and making it yourself. Admitedly, for the higher price, you will get a professionally made saber, which will no doubt be better than one you've made yourself, (I'd acknowledge that even against my own saber, which I am extremely proud of) but, as Olos pointed out before, there's less of a feeling of pride, or personal achievement with a purchased saber. Once you have a design (and component list) finalized (which again, I'm more than willing to help you with) it shouldn't take you more than a month (depending on your free time) to make the saber yourself, even if you were to only do one thing per day, then put it down again Believe it or not, the saber I made to resemble Master Windu's was probably the easiest one I've made. (Not a perfect copy, but it's clear who's saber it is based on ) I used a single length of pipe for the body, a brass hose coupling as the emitter (superglued in place) windscreen wiper blades as the lower grip fins (ends were shaped with nail clippers) I bought a BMX grip, Cut it open down one side, and then cut it to form the shape for the upper grip and superglued it in place. I then wrapped (and glued) brass wire (in any craft shop for hanging paintings) in between the two grips. The end pommel was a small gas cartridge (from a puncture repair kit) that I forced into the tube, and then I used my dremel to drill the hole for the covertec clip. The activator was simply a piece of excess material from cutting the upper grip, which I painted with brass colored model paint and superglued in place. The only sawing I had to do was across the pipe to get the length correct Ooh, pros and cons of PVC and Metal... PVCPros: Cheap. Easy to work with. Cons: Will never look like real metal, regardless of spray paint. Also, it is not as durable as metal, and the slightest nick in it will ruin the finish. metalPros: Looks 'real'. Hard wearing. Keeps it's appearance. Cons: Can be expensive. Harder to work than PVC (but more rewarding outcome)

sweet.
Take lots of pictures. Part of the fun of doing a saber is to show it off and get comments/suggestions. :-)

Fantastic You indeed have a worthy Jedi Master, I'm sure he'll be able to guide you through the construction process Any amount of money you put into a self-built saber as opposed to a purchassed one, you will appreciate all the more, when you hold the finished article and know that you made it with yourself Best of luck
