Yes, you just wrap it around and tie. However, don't you find the ties bulk up under the belt? I don't have long ties on mine and I just pin them in place. lol...with all the bulk around a Jedi's waist...I guess I don't notice it...but sure...they could be pinned in place....and again...every Jedi is different....so Kryy...you may or may not like the Obi better....let us know....I am putting it in the mail today...so you should get it in a few days.... here is the tutorial at our main site... www.thejediassembly.com/tutorials.php?id=b5hif you click on the last illustration of the sash it shows you the basic idea of an Obi... and here is a child's Jedi costume I made that shows the Obi tied...since the childs costume is smaller...I ended up making the tie out of seam binding as it was easier...and you won't see it anyway...

OK, so I put it together last night, and I'm getting used to it... I like it a lot! I have been trying the square knot idea, but it does add extra bulk (any more thicker layers and I'll have to remake my belt - yikes! Fasting is sounding good about now!). I think I will try the half knot-double pass through idea (book binders knot... I've been told it's a surgeon's knot). Pinning is a thought, too. Once I have it on with the belt, it doesn't go anywhere, to be sure (at least so far!)
Last night, I also fussed with another undertunic, cutting apart other attempts and fashioning one similar to Granny-Wan's t-shirt idea. I think I have a winner, but since I adjusted and tweaked it so many times, I don't know if I'd be able to duplicate it! lol! (hope I don't sweat too much in it!)
Thanks, again, Schph, for your willingness to share your talents selflessly... it's the Jedi way. :-)

Well, now I have a confession. I was at the store today and remembered getting rained on last Mardi Gras, so I looked in the accessories and got a brown mini-umbrella that I can conceal in the large pockets that I put in my Jedi robe, just in case I get caught in the rain. I'll have something that matches.
I suppose it's serious if you're accessorizing.

Very nice bag, Kai! Is it needlepoint? Embroidery? Or something else?
Saberbelt has come up with a very sensible way of making belts without snaps or velcro and I'm very tempted to try it. But I've got to finish some other costumes first before trying that.
The Jedi costume habit has one pitfall for me in that brown is one of my worst colors. Well, yellow is worse than anything, but brown isn't great. I'm a winter and the only brown on that pallet is taupe. I didn't even own anything that was brown before the Jedi costuming. But that never stopped a Jedi and there are some shades of brown that I don't look horrible in.
And now I always check out brown tones on fabric now. Just in case there's something cool. Fortunately, prices are a good way of preventing too much accumulation.

Well, Granny-Wan, I think you found the fabric I am using, except I would describe it as stone-khaki. It is absolutely FAB; it has a nice weight and hangs like a dream. Sews pretty easy, too, without stretch. Love it, but, like you say, it's not cheap. I bought it with my 40% coupon at JoAnn's.
I just got another coupon in the mail, so I'm probably gonna go get another bit of yardage of that same fabric for the next tunic attempt. Sheesh... cha-ching!

What kind of material is used for the ties on the obi? Once I'm able I've got some obi's to upgrade. I used velcro & eye hooks but but tied obi's would be a lot better. ::)I was soooooooo green when I made my costumes---& I'm still sooooooo very green. I keep learning new things about my costume . I have no idea what waist I am. I'm just glad when they actually fit & look like I'm a Jedi at least I hope I look like a Jedi when I put it on . One thing about Jedi costumes we are constantly tweaking, maintaining & upgrading them.

I make the ties on the obi from the same fabric that the obi is made from... If I have a long enough piece of fabric...the obi and ties are cut as one piece.....if I don't have one piece of long enough fabric...then I make the ties separate...but of the same fabric.
The costume in the photo above is a child's Jedi...since the obi is of a smaller scale...I just decided to used double fold bias tape as I had some in a similar color as the obi.

:)Thank you. I know have some material left from some of my costumes but not all. But again it will be awhile so maybe some new stuff will come out on the market that will match for some. I am looking for the chocolate calcutta again--last years chocolate calcutta was like faded brown--yuck

Very nice bag, Kai! Is it needlepoint? Embroidery? Or something else? Ha! None of the above. It's an iron-on! Just print and iron

I love the diversity of the costumes I've seen of TJA's members. No two are alike which is awseome.:-)
I also have to make myself stop sewing costumes or I'd fill another closet. I like experimenting with various fabric types. I like textrues and movement.

Ha! None of the above. It's an iron-on! Just print and iron Very nice and very simple. The background color is very light. I can never get anything that light on a black background with an iron-on Is that the same fabric as the rest of the bag, or is there is lighter colored circle?help me! I ordered 2 more kinds of fabric this morning.... I do want to do a departure from the "norm" though...still within the earth tone family...but.. something different... any ideas?? Well, my last tunic was a floor length one (ankle length actually) with a stole around the neck instead of tabbards like Obi-Wan's in ANH. I've been very happy with it.
The undertunic is the same on top as the usual kind, but it's long, like a dress with a flared bottom and just a little shorter than the tunic. It's definitely a different look and you can wear brown ankle length boots with it since no one will see the tops.
I haven't posted a pattern for it, but I noticed that Obi-Wan doesn't have any shoulder seams on the top, so the top part is just one piece (plus the collar) and the bottom is 3 pieces, one piece in back and the two front/side peice. I just put in a lot of flare on the bottom, extending it down from the top piece.
