Minor correction... it isn't Jedi Kai's t-shirt undertunic idea, it is Granny-Wan's. I just looked at it again, and it may solve all the problems of this universe! (sheesh! how many failed undertunics do I need to make??) :-) I only had to make two failures before I did the T-shirt successfully... or was it three? I just wore mine this past weekend, and so did my friend.... we were quite comfortable! Let me know if you need a collar pattern!

I find this thread hilarious, although I don't have more than one tunic... I make them for other people and everytime it turns out better than my own... I make modifications and such... so I keep saying that I need to make myself a new one! I still use the basic 4450 pattern, but the front part below the belt is now straight down, and there's a six inch flare on each side from the waist down... I've enlarged the hood on the cloak significantly... I made a costume for a friend and she wore it to WonderCon this past weekend... her first time out in any costume ;D and was much admired by our "costuming cousins" in the Rebel Legion... As for Obis, they are always difficult to fit the female form, no matter what your size is... they tend to flare out over the hips... I've tried fastening with velcro and hooks and eyes... velcro was a flop, hooks and eyes work but leave gaps on chubbier people... I haven't tried ties yet, I don't want any extra "padding" around the waist... but maybe in the next go-round.... My next project is to make a T-shirt undertunic in dark brown (mine is beige), then the new tunic.... although my friend's cloak of suedecloth makes me envious... it flows out behind her and make her look POWERFUL! ;D ;D

ll I have is obis....with the tie.... I used to do the other kind of sash with velcro...after doing one obi....I threw the rest away.... obis are the way to go... completetly adjustable.... want an Obi pattern? YES!!I've liked the velcro best, but it is NOT adjustable. (And the actors did not have to deal with weight fluctuations from wearing these month to month and year to year.) I've tried several styles of wrap, but wide ones add too much bulk and narrow ones wrapped twice roll up and disappear under the utility belt, from both the top and bottom. I've even tried a "quick" version of the "staged" one that sort of hooks over itself and wraps twice. (You probably know the one I mean... it's been pictured here and on Padawan's Guide and everywhere else.) I may try a more careful version of that one. I also sketched out a version with darts and belt stiffening on the inside (sort of corset-like construction but "hidden") with the "loose" fabric obi-look on the outside. Maybe this would help keep it in place? So yes, I would love some help! Women have some special "fit" issues... you're right, Granny-Wan!

I am really struggling with the undertunic, however. Just can't seem to get the neckline right. *shrug* Hendel, in the interim, while you're working on getting the undertunic neckline like you want it, try this tip: Crisscross the neck so it looks neat and then pin it on each side to your bra about where the strap attaches. When you put on your tunic and tabards, you won't be able to see the pins. My first undertunic was too large... I made "my" size without taking into consideration the stretchiness of the gauze. But I still wear it, so I pin the crisscross and it stays in place. (Actually the "too big" undertunic is the greenish khaki one in my avatar... like you could actually see it there... ) Sorry to multi-post... haven't figured out how to quote more than one person in a single post.

Jauhzmynn, Hendel: thanks very much! I'm glad my posts have been helpful.
It took me more than one undertunic to get that right. I still need to adjust one. The undertunic is most comfortable if it has a bit of stretch to it, but the collar never lays right with stretchy fabric. A couple of things that make it fit better:
- add a strip of thin, non-stretchy facing material between the layers of the collar fabric.
- make the collar close fitting to the neck; with a little stretch, it will end up looser, but still fitted.
- add little squares of velcro at the bottom of 'V' of the collar to keep it in place.
- don't worry about any sagging of the undertunic that can't be seen.
For obis, I've been very fortunate. I have a very long waist and I wrap my obi around twice. There's a hole in the middle so I can tie the end underneath to the top end. The extra layer keeps it flat. And I use ties. They're more adjustable. And you don't need to make a square knot that might poke into you to keep it in place, if the ties are made of a coarse fabric. Just do a regular half knot and wrap the end around again.
Has anyone ever tried an obi that is slightly curved, so it would lay flatter over the waist and top of the hips?

Schph, wow... that's wonderful... thanks! Not sure how much fabric I have left.... let me get in the closet this weekend and see. I believe I have 1/2 a width from when I cut the tabards... that might work if it doesn't have to be on the bias. I'll look Saturday and PM you and we'll work out the details. Thanks so much!! And Ani, I have re-read your bits of advice... agree with the others... always good ideas and encouraging. A big part of my problem with the tunic first and then continuing with the obis, is that I'm short-waisted... and I never realized just HOW much until this picture from a few weeks ago... (It's blurry with weird lighting... I was trying to photograph too late into the evening.) Goodness, this has become the "Jedi women support group". thread... I love it, I love it!

The obi does not need to be cut on the bias.....
The fabric will be used double thickness....
but if you are short some fabric...I could just use a plain cotton in a color as close as possible to the "real" fabric for the back....

Ditto for me...
there comes a time in a jedi's life when she needs to have an adjustable obi.... velcro is great, I love it... but when one travels to different planets, one 's body adjusts to the different gravity and all, so ones waistline fluctuates...
I'll say no more....

Your the best Schph ;D !!! But yes, you are a junkie (after see the pics it is confirmed)!!! but there is nothing wrong with that!! Many of us here are the same way!!! I wear my Jedi costumes at 80% of the events I'll wear it out before long My friend that made it already made the comment that se would ahve done a better job sewing it had she known I were going to be wearing it hundreds of times (she said that she thought it would be like many of my other ventures that get used twice and then thrown is a closet ). So your right...there is something VERY addictive about being a Jedi (Obi-wan and Qui-Gon are hot perhaps? Lightsabers are cool perhaps?)

Agreed, Siri... it's addicting. For all of the reasons you said... I'd add the robe... when I was wearing it last weekend at Connooga, someone commented about it sweeping behind me as I walked. I do have to admit it's one of my favorite things about the costume... it's sort of "regal" or something. Schph, PM sent about obi fabric.

Well I'm late to this thread but very ;D happy to say I'm a Jedi junkie, I think I have 10 Jedi tunics plus a few more hopefully down the road. 7 of them are canon. All are different materials, except 4 are made out of different shades of brown from Calcutta. I figured if I was going to wear a Star Wars costume it would only be Jedi. I think I've got 3 more tunics in the future planning stage. It's finding the materials thats a bit of a bummer & I'm always looking. I also have several robes made & in the hopefully a few more in the future planning stage once I can get back to sewing. The one thing that I could improve on are the inner tunics---of which I have several---but it's always nice to mix & match. I do have a small closet dedicated to my "Jedi wardrobe" I don't have the problem of what to wear it's more like When to wear what color brown to what event. I wish I could get to a whole lot more events.
