Maybe C5 will be run better now!
Here's the scoop:
There's some big news that just came onto the radar: Lucasfilm is suing Gen Con over issues with Celebration IV! While the case is stamped January 10th, this is the first I've heard anything about it. You can read the full complaint but here are the allegations.
Gen Con failed to uphold its legal obligations in terms of financial reporting, accounting and payments to Lucasfilm ($500,000 in damages)
Gen Con did not give auction proceeds to Make-A-Wish as they had agreed to do ($150,000 in damages)
Gen Con did not give Lucasfilm their share of the auction proceeds ($150,000 in damages)
Gen Con did this all unjustly ($150,000 in damages)
The suit will take place in federal court in the Northern District of California. Beyond Gen Con, LLC (the company) with its employees and officers, Peter Adkinson is also mentioned in the complaint although without any personal accusations. This is pretty serious stuff, so we'll have to see what happens.

Read this yesterday on TF.net. Interesting stuff (I even read the entire legal brief). I suspected incompetence, but not theft, and certainly not from Make A Wish. Watching now in anticipation of perhaps a new convention organizer and (I hope) a location closer to the center of things. Siri, any word about Mpls?

Whooooooaaaaaa.
I remember people posting about GenCoon taking forever to send out volunteer reimbursements for CIII, but I haven't noticed much talk about it this time. This goes far beyond that.
I thought CIV was run better than CIII, but I attributed that mostly to CIV having a lot of volunteers who were experienced with ComiCon. The line management I sas at CIV was very good.
There's also an update on tf.n that GenCon has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The plot thickens

Yikes! Uh-oh....now I can see why Lucas doesn't like corporations. C'mon, they'll have it. GenCon may be big, but conventions can be run without them. The way Lucas was talking on that tape at CIV, he'll make sure they have it. Open debate about prequels/etc aside, he hasn't let us down. He won't now.

GenCon filing bankruptcy? Yeah, I heard that too...though I believe Chapter 11 is just for relief from debtors. Chapter 13 would be more serious, meaning they would be completely out of business. I was surprised to hear this, but I was also happy that Lucasfilm terminated their contract with them. And I have no doubt that there will be a CV...probably around the release of the live TV series I would think. For those who are interested, here's a link to the legal brief: reporter.blogs.com/thresq/files/LucasVGenCon.pdf

I noticed that they were still planning GenCon in Indy...I wonder how much that might change because of this.

I saw on tf.n that now GenCon is counter-suing Lucasfilm about not paying for their booth at CIV. I don't think they're going to come to any kind of settlement too quickly.

There's an update on tf.n about GenCon, a report from someone who says that GenCon is being sued by someone else because they never paid for the temp staff they used at C4. Interesting.
The same information is at Rebelscum but I wonder if anyone has looked up the text of this second lawsuit like the Lucasfilm one?

Intersting, I hope there is a CV because I really liked CIV, and I want to take my girlfriend to a convention because she wanted to go to CIV but couldn't because of a play she was in.
