The game takes place 4,000 years before the events in the Star Wars movies. Darth Malak — a Dark Lord of the Sith and Darth Revan's former apprentice — has unleashed a Sith armada against the Republic. Malak's aggression has left the Jedi scattered and vulnerable; many Jedi Knights die in battle and others swear allegiance to Malak. The game opens with the player's character — whom the player can customize to be either male or female; the gender is canonically male — awakening aboard a doomed Republic ship with no recollection of his past. After escaping the ship, the character's player gradually gathers companions and pieces together his past while attempting to stop Malak's forces. To accomplish this, the main character and his companions search for Star Maps that together reveal the location of the Star Forge, an ancient space station that creates massive amounts of material for Malak.
The Jedi:
Bastila Shan-- Bastila Shan was an archetype for the Jedi Order. Like many of her compatriots, she was trained from a young age because of her strong natural gift for the Force. In particular, she became renowned for her skill in the rare art of Battle Meditation, an ability which could turn the tides of battle by strengthening one side and weakening the other. Bastila's prowess in this ability thrust her into the spotlight of the Galactic Republic's struggle against the Sith during the Jedi Civil War.
Although little is known of her history before she became a Jedi, she reveals to Revan that she has fond memories of her father, and bad memories of her mother. She says that her mother would push her father into going on treasure hunts, only to find nothing. Bastila remembers that she was constantly on their ship, moving from planet to planet.
However, Bastila does have a brief encounter with her mother on Tatooine during her mission to find the ancient star maps that would lead to the star forge. Her mother claimed that she was dying and tried to reach out to Bastila while slandering her father, but Bastila remained true to her high views of her father and refused to listen to her mother. However, in another story line, Bastila accepts what her mother says and begins to reunite herself with her mother, after helping her to retrieve a lost holocron of her father's. Bastila's strongly mixed emotions within her family might have spurred her later fall to the dark side.
Bastila was known throughout the Order as a somewhat arrogant and brash youth. Her Jedi Masters had advised her to be cautious, but Bastila proved almost too impulsive to let the Order guide her themselves. Despite her overconfidence, she was always well aware of the burden of responsibility that weighed her, and all Jedi, down.
Jolee Bindo -- Jolee Bindo is a character from the first game, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic. An old hermit living on Kashyyyk and a former Jedi, Bindo helped Revan get past shield generators that lead deeper into the shadowlands and remains with the main character from then on. He is a Jedi Consular in Knights of the Old Republic. After the main character gains experience, Jolee will tell of how he was once a smuggler, and through this met his wife. Against the wishes of the Jedi Council he trained her in the Jedi ways. She was then seduced to the dark side by Exar Kun, upon failing to convince Jolee to join Exar Kun as well, she drew her lightsaber on him. Jolee won the fight, but he was unable to bring himself to kill her. She escaped and went to on to kill many Jedi. Jolee expected to be punished harshly for his mistakes, but the council said he had learned his lessons the hard way, and even considered promoting him to knighthood. Disappointed with the Jedi's decision, Jolee left the order and started wandering the galaxy before being stranded on Kashyyk, where he meets the player character.
Jolee Bindo is a unique Jedi in the fact that he believes in neither the light or dark side of the force. He walks the line between them stating to Revan that he thinks the Jedi are wrong about love. If the player takes the path to the light he will continue to be available in their party and continue to help in the fight against Malak and to destroy the Star Forge. However, if you go to the dark side Jolee will eventually try to stop you and will fight against you and Bastila.
Juhani -- Juhani was once a padawan who once believed she killed her master. She turned to the dark side and put a taint on the Grove on Dantooine where she meditated. She believed that after what she did the Jedi Council would not accept her back and that the dark side held greater power. Depending on which path the conversation is steered in by the player, Revan may either fight (and kill) her or redeem her and have her join him to discover the location of the Star Forge. She is also another love interest of the Female Revan (light side) if the player builds up conversations the right way.
The Pilot of the Ebon Hawk -- Carth was assigned to the cruiser Endar Spire during the Jedi Civil War when it was ambushed by a Sith fleet over the planet Taris. Narrowly escaping by taking an escape pod to the planet surface with the memory-wiped Revan (who was given a new name and a fake biography of a simple Republic soldier), the two searched for and eventually found the Jedi Bastila Shan on the surface. Stealing the ship Ebon Hawk from the crime lord Davik, Revan, Bastila, and Carth, along with Twi'lek slicer Mission Vao, her Wookiee partner Zaalbar, Mandalorian mercenary Canderous Ordo, and the astromech droid T3-M4, they managed to escape Taris just as Darth Malak obliterated the city with a planetary bombardment. After escaping to the Jedi Academy on Dantooine, he was sent along with Bastila and Revan to find the Star Maps and the Star Forge. Upon investigation, Revan found that Carth's homeworld of Telos was destroyed by the Sith under the guidance of Admiral Saul Karath, his former commanding officer and mentor. His wife was killed in the attack and his son, Dustil, went missing, presumed dead. Revan and Carth later found Dustil as a Sith recruit in the Sith Academy on Korriban. The destruction of his planet led to a significant amount of guilt for Carth, who had and didn't use the opportunity to stop Saul and vowed to kill him. Furthermore, Saul's betrayal and the betrayal of the men who became Sith have caused him to have trouble trusting anyone, almost to the point of paranoia.
While looking for the Star Maps, Carth and his companions were captured by Admiral Karath and taken aboard his ship, the Leviathan. After breaking out, Bastila, Carth, and Revan managed to make it to the bridge of the ship, where Carth killed Saul. As he was dying, Saul revealed the true identity of Carth and Bastila's companion - that of the former Dark Lord Revan. Carth felt betrayed, though he was later able to accept that Revan was no longer the Sith Lord and had become a true servant of the light.
Facts about the Ebon Hawk -- The Ebon Hawk (circa 3,956 BBY-?) is a spaceship in the Star Wars Expanded Universe video game series Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. It is most likely based on the Millennium Falcon, as it has a likeness in shape to the Falcon, and is armed with similar top and bottom mounted laser cannons. Given the similar design, armaments, and duty (freighter-turned-smuggler), some have proposed that the Ebon Hawk is likewise a Corellian light freighter. The name Ebon Hawk also implies similarity to the Millennium Falcon, as both ships have the name of a bird in their titles. Also like the Falcon, the Ebon Hawk has a long history as a smuggling vessel with at least two known hidden compartments. And similarly, in their respective time periods, both ships have also been referred to as the fastest ship in the galaxy. It is not known where the Ebon Hawk was built or by whom it was constructed, but when Revan, his companions, and the Ebon Hawk were taken into custody by the Selkath judges on Manaan, they found that the ship was registered on the Republic world of Transel.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords (KotOR II)
The game takes place five years after the events of Knights of the Old Republic,[1] in a time when the Jedi have been nearly exterminated by the Sith. The player's character, a former Jedi Knight exiled from the Jedi Order, is referred to as "the Exile" or "Jedi Exile." Throughout the game, the player's character restores a connection to the Force while, with the help of non-player character companions, trying to stop the Sith. The Exile makes choices that turn the player to either the dark side or light side of the Force.
Jedi Civil War
Shortly before Darth Malak's rise to power, Bastila wielded a single-bladed yellow lightsaber, the standard weapon of Jedi Sentinels at that time. However, by the end of the war, Bastila had exchanged this sword for a double-bladed yellow lightsaber. The double-bladed lightsaber was first invented by the great Dark Lord of the Sith Exar Kun. A difficult weapon to master, it has been wielded by extremely few over the millennia, and at no time in greater abundance than during the Jedi Civil War, when it became very popular in Darth Revan's new Sith Empire but also among a few Jedi.
Bastila was part of a strike force sent to capture Darth Revan, Dark Lord of the Sith, during the Jedi Civil War. Though Bastila and her strike team managed to corner the Dark Lord on the bridge of his flagship, Darth Malak chose that moment to betray his Master by opening fire on Revan's ship. Though Revan was severely injured and almost killed in the attack, Bastila managed to save his life, thus forging a powerful Force bond between the two. Revan was brought to the Jedi Council, who either opted not to restore his former memories or were unable to, gave him a new identity as a faithful and skilled member of the Republic, and was later requested to serve under Bastila on the ship Endar Spire. Along with the loss of his previous identity of the Dark Lord Revan, he also lost all remembrance of his force sensitivity, though the force still worked strongly through him without his knowledge.
