There are two large ones near my home- I check both of them on a weekly basis! ;D You never know what you might find in there! I have put together many parts of costumes with these stores (saving mucho dineros ).

I'm embarrassed (OK maybe I'm not if I'm confessing) to tell you I got a Victoria's Secret kimono in one the week before Halloween and made a quick Jedi tunic. (I ran out of time to make a "real" one.....) And if you mean, shopping in them for real life clothes... absolutely!! Locally, I have found Goodwill to be of the best quality, and Salvation Army to be less so... It may be different in your area. Check their displays and neatness of the stores and you can get an idea. A 60-something lady at our church shops almost exclusively at thrift stores and she always looks FABULOUS! And for baby clothes they outgrow really fast, it's a great idea. Just be sure to wash everything really well (or have it dry cleaned if appropriate). I think I WOULD avoid shoes though.... [Oops, fixed the photo link, I hope.... it's from the "Jedi Beginnings" thread....]

It was fun costume hunting at the goodwill! There is a Salvation Army near me that I clothed my kids at for years and years. Why buy brand new stuff that the boys would have trashed in a day anyway? They had a few nice things, and evrything else was second hand. I love second hand stuff because it's already broken in!

We have Americas Thrift as its called about 5 minutes from where I am. I go there now alot. I already bought two new skirts from them and about 4 tops that I can wear with my maternity pants and the skirts. Already this week I picked out about 4 newborn outfits all looking brand new!!! They are great and kick butt brand names too . Got 2 disney shirts one with Tigger and one with pooh and the other is a Gerber sleeper.

Goodwill ROCKS!!! It is an absolute goldmine. I'm thinking of looking for a pair of stretch/ stirrup pants that are periwinkle blue as a start to a Leia Endor costume. Old purse straps sometimes make excellent starts for belts. And once in a while, if luck holds out, you can find a pair of really nice boots at a fraction of the price of new ones!

Oooo... thrift stores and garage sales are my favorite haunts. You just never know what you might find. FOund a kick-butt pair of boots there for $3 but they were just a tad too small, darn it.
I love looking out for books and videos there too

Yeah, and the books are like 50 cents each... for big books. Neat old books too! I also donate alot to SA because they really helped my sister-in-laws husband. He was an alcoholic and they took him in and cared for him whenever she couldn't deal with him anymore. I also donate alot because it really was a lifesaver when we were completely broke and the kids needed clothes... and I needed household stuff like dishes and tableware. It left us enough to pay the electric bill... almost. hehe.

If Victoria only knew....

Absolutely! I got the brown leather (washable) suede, new or newly new, coat I wear for my Firefly costume at Value Village (a local thrift/second hand store).
Good last minute tunic, Kryy
