Ive heard countless times that when a jedi dies they live on through the force and in rare occasions such as yoda, obiwan, and anakin can return from the netherrelalm of the force. But what happens when a sith dies? In the first Knights of the old republic game when you visit the ancient sith lord tomb of Ajunta Pall he returns in a spirit form wanting you to take his weapons away. Its like he is trapped and can never escape to become one with the force. So can anyone help me out?

There are many ways to learn the ways of the Force, but only those who have joined it may know best.

Supposedly, if they were powerful enough Sith, their spirits remain without becoming one with the Force.

So basically they have no future and are trapped forever, right?

I don't think it's ever been made clear what happens to either Sith or Jedi after they die. My guess is that they all return to the Force, losing their individulaity, but "living" on with the generic living background signal in the galaxy. Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan and Yoda retaining their identity beyond death is unusual and presumably beyond the power of a Sith. And I wonder how long they last in that disembodied state? They may eventually fade back into the Force with time.

Yes I read this somewhere in the post-RotJ EU... Old Ben could only stick around for a limited amount of time.

So basically they have no future and are trapped forever, right? Like any other ghost, they'd be stuck until they accept that they're dead.

I think I read in some EU timeline that 5 years after ROTJ- Old Ben contacts Luke for the last time-
He tells Luke that he will no longer be able to maintain his Spirit image/voice and will finally move on to another realm.
In effect it is Ben's second death scene.
*Found it! It is in "Heir to the Empire".

So basically what ive concluded is the jedi help others and save their power until they join the force while the sith forfill their wants and waste their power while they are living only to destroy the future they could have had. Am I right?

I'd say that it all depends on the Force practitioner and their level of skill. I'm pretty sure I remember reading somewhere that Obi-Wan could only manifest for about 10 years after his death... Qui-Gon didn't know how to manifest himself visually, but he was able to communicate with Master Yoda over 10 years after his death... Exar Kun was able to manifest himself several millenia after his death... I wonder if Darth Maul haunts the Theed Palace Reactor Room? ;D

Perhaps it's more an issue of "entanglements". Either the things left undone, or those left behind that anchor either to this life.

Hmm...fascinating question.. If Jedi become one with the Force, then maybe Sith do stick around... Or maybe, if they're just your average, everyday Sith they go to the hot basement from whence there is no return...

I think it's just something that varies with the individual Force user...

I can imagine Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan conversing after they had both joined the force and it goes something like this...
Obi-Wan: Alas Master, I've lost communication with the matter universe...
Qui-Gon: What!? It's only been ten years! Didn't I teach you anything?
Obi-Wan: Yes, I should've listened I suppose. I wonder...
Qui-Gon: So, now you consider my teachings and start thinking outside the box!
LOL...Sorry for that bit of insanity I've just always imagined Qui-Gon using his odd sense of humor to annoy the ever stoic Obi-Wan, at least once after they are both with the force.
