by the code as interpreted in the Old Republic, they're not allowed attachment. Only under extraordinary circumstances is marriage permitted. Ki-adi Mundi is married for special reason. Other than that I know of no other Jedi-sanctioned attachment. That was conveniently forgotten in NJO as several Jedi were married. Vergere hammered Luke for being married...
Love itself is okay...

Well then replace it with compassion

Say whatever you want. It doesn't really matter - I'm sorry. I'm being grumpy right now

It's interesting that Padme, an educated Senator, had assumed that Jedi were not allowed to love until Anakin corrected her. In more ways than one.

Well, she meant romantic love. He twisted it. Didn't he?

Exactly- Anakin was bending the rules to fit what he felt was right- his love for Padme. "I'm supposed to have compassion for everyone, and compassion is love, so being in love with Padme is A-OK. See? I'm a good Jedi; I'm following the Code."
Wrong.
The Jedi have unconditional love for all living beings- they exist only to help others. They are selfless. They would give their very life for a stranger. But in order to be so self-giving they must separate themselves from everything that could interfere with this way of life: possessions and the people they are closest to.
This is probably the most difficult thing for a Jedi to do- to separate him/her/itself from the ones they love. This is so they are not blinded by emotion. Suppose a Jedi had to chose between saving a planet with billions of people, or saving his Mother, or Wife, or Husband? This is the point of having no fear of losing the ones we hold dearest to us. It is so the Jedi will always make the choice for the greater good.
Qui-Gon did say it would be a hard life.

yeah to be a jedi would be like being a preist that works for NATO to keep peace by hacking people who will die to defend what they believe is right Strange because to the jedi enemy point of view they could be in the right but the jedi disagree as does the senate and they are sentenced to death or be forced to agree i think jedi should not deal in politics because its to hard to decipher whats right but if innocent lifes are at stake thats different

that code is taken from the movie "Dragon Heart" and re-worded to fit the Jedi Order.

AH HA!!! So that whole Valor/Virtue/Roth/Wrath thing is just cross-movie pollination. Well, I guess that's why it doesn't really fit the Jedi, especially the wrath and the 'long live' yell at the end.
The second, shorter code was in "I, Jedi", though I don't know if Stackpole came up with it or it came from an earlier EU book.
