I don't think a fire would effectively destroy a lightsaber for a memorial, unless Qui-Gon's funeral pyre was a lot hotter than it looked. Lightsabers must be build to withstand a lot of punishment just to work in the first place and the components could need some special attention. The power core alone could be tricky and hazardous to dispose of, though they're obviously not easily explosive or Anakin would have blown himself up a long time ago.

It is common throughout history for warriors to use a fallen friends weapon or armour and was also carried into LOTR when Aragorn wears Boromir's vambraces after his death.
I would have really enjoyed seeing Obi Wan carry Qui-Gons until loosing it on Geonosis. Having a green blade for a brief period would have been cool. Although every Jedi creates their own saber there is a practice discussed in the EU of trying out another Jedis saber to see how well it worked and how the design was. Then exchanging them back after field testing it for awhile.

Freeze frame when Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Padme are on the Reek. Next shot, OW's POV, 2 Jedi toss up lightsabres to the Jedi on the Reek. These Jedi are two members of NSync. Next shot, OW and A catch the weapons.

Next shot, OW and A catch the weapons. From the Star Wars Insider #77, page 88: " Who are the two Jedi who toss lightsabers to Obi-Wan and Anakin at the start of the arena battle in Episode II?
Those are Nicanas Tassu (the long-haired one) and Sephjet Josall (The baldheaded one). Both are named after the Episode II postproduction crewmembers who play their parts - Visual Effects Editor Nic Anastassiou and Assistant Editor Joseph Jett Sally."

Qui-Gon's saber could have ended up at the Temple. Or it could have been too painful of a reminder for him to want to keep it. Or it just may be Jedi tradition that everyone makes their own. I lean toward the tradition theory.
And if Jedi are forbidden possessions then I think that gifting is likely kept to the barest minimnum. And I honestly think that a Master would really prefer to make their own. Again, I think it's tradition. I think it is just tradition. I believe it stems back from before the Great Hyperspace War with Exar Kun. Back when their lightsabers were hand carved and were truly personalized. If you've read the GHW comic series you should know what I'm talking about.

Nope, I haven't read the comic. But isn't the Luukesabers web site such a great reasource for insanely picky Jedi details?
Tradition is the most likely reason for Obi-Wan to use his own and not Qui-Gon's lightsaber, though it's all speculation really; there's nothing definite in the movies about it, so far. I am looking forward to Obi-Wan getting Anakin's saber, however it happens in ROTS. It will cast a weird light on those jokes about Anakin losing his saber in ATOC.

Several Sources in the Expanded universe point to the belief of many Jedi that using two sabers (with the exception of emergency) was bad form or uncouth. Both Jedi Master Rahn,(from the Darkforces 2 game), and Count Dooku made comments about it being in bad taste. I think it was a prejudice that was similar to the way swordsmen in Europe felt about fighters who used two blade ( Rapier and Main Gauche). It was considered less honorable.

Especially when looking for inspiration for a lightsaber design. However I would like to find a way to build a protosaber. I think it would go over really well at a convention (like CIII).
