Does anyone know why most jedi only have one lightsaber? it seems to me that two lightsabers are a lot more effective in many different combat situations rather than a single saber.

Yes 2 weapons can be more effective, but only if you are actually skilled in using 2 weapons.
If not then they are actually worse than using one on its own.

Actually, if you watch EP. II in the Arena battle you can see that some of the Jedi are using two lightsabers against the battle droids. I guess it is just up to that particular Jedi if they wish to use 1 or 2 lightsabers for combat.

The NSync Jedi must have been practitioners of 2 sabre figthing since they each gave one to Ani and Obi-Wan.

That's something. I figured they knew that Obi and Ani had been captured and they're lightsabers probably had been taken away, so they brought 2 extra ones for them. But if they were jedi who used 2 lightsabers, that would make sense also.

Jeffrek is right........if you don't know how to use two sabers and are not skilled in using two weapons to defend then having two will be a detriment to you. Consider Anakin, when he was using two against Dooku that was not his usual style and it was more of a hinderence. When Dooku cut one of them (dangerously close to his hand) he was able to put up a better fight (although only slightly).
Those Jedi who used two weapons in the Arena were probably Jedi weapon masters or referred to as Jedi Maritial Artists. If you don't train with two often then you would be better at having just one.
It is also my belief that when a Jedi is going into a significant battle, just like warriors of old on this planet they would take an extra weapon to either use both or in case one is damaged. Anakin had his own cut in the droid factory and then another when fighting Dooku. Pretty common to loose or damage a weapon, especially in a battle. Having a spare so to speak would be very important in a battle. You could also loan one to a Jedi who looses theirs. Of course, if your on a rescue mission to save Jedi you would definately want to bring spares for them because you need them as allies.

A spare might only be used.....sparingly.
If a lightsaber is as personal as is implied by a Jedi having to build their own, then I'd think that a spare would be one that they've trained with as well. Of course, if you don't have any, then any 'ol saber will do.
Jedi seem to carry a minimum of equipment with them by habit. It looks like most of them only rarely carry an extra lightsaber.

Most Jedi only carry one since under most circumstances that is all they need for defence. Battle of course is a very different set of circumstances. A Jedi could carry their first built saber along with their current version or perhaps carry one from a former friend or padawan.
Here is a question: Why didn't Obi Wan carry Qui-Gon's after his death, especially since he used it to dispatch Darth Maul?
Why don't padawans make special sabers as gifts for their masters?
Obi Wan keeps Anakins to later give to Luke..........I am sure similar situations occured throughout the history of the Jedi Order.

Here is a question: Why didn't Obi Wan carry Qui-Gon's after his death, especially since he used it to dispatch Darth Maul? Why don't padawans make special sabers as gifts for their masters? Qui-Gon's saber could have ended up at the Temple. Or it could have been too painful of a reminder for him to want to keep it. Or it just may be Jedi tradition that everyone makes their own. I lean toward the tradition theory.
And if Jedi are forbidden possessions then I think that gifting is likely kept to the barest minimnum. And I honestly think that a Master would really prefer to make their own. Again, I think it's tradition.

It is also possible they burned it with him. An ancient tradition for many warrior cultures, to send them off with their weapon.
I wonder if the Jedi temple has such a thing as a saber vault of fallen heros.......
Interesting possibility........if so what I wouldn't give for a peek inside that........

I didn't read Rogue Planet.........I thought it would have been very cool having him use it in AOTC. He looses it anyway on Geonosis when he is captured and this would have made a perfect seguay into the new one for ROTS.

Yup! Totally. It would have been a nice parallel to Luke using Anakin's.
