I was sitting in church listening to the pastor tell his sermon when an idea popped out in my mind. It hit me that Star Wars is based on a Christian religion, or at least some religous belief. It makes pefect sense if you stop to think about it. The force= God. Jedi= Angels. Sith= Demons. Sith Lord= Satin. The rules the Jedi believe in= The Christian way of life. Meditation= Well flat out prayer or meditation. Has anyone had this thought, and does it make any sense?? Or am I alone in thinking this??

GL based the Jedi on various religious "orders" and the story on established Archetypes. There is alot of similarity to a number of faiths and much can be read into it. While one can make a good argument for comparison to a Christian-like faith there are other comparisons that would stand up as well. GL intended it to be sort of a plain vanilla religious order.

I've often wondered about that. There's so many comparisons between the way of the Jedi and Christianity that it's not even funny.
Of course, the one major 'hole' in that; the one famous line from ROTS: 'Only a Sith deals in absolutes'. In other words, he was saying nothin is black and white. I beg to differ. Truth is always black and white. I think GL got that part, along with some other elements, from some of the Eastern religions.
What stands out to me, though, is the strong themes of forgiveness and redemption in the sixth film. They remind me that there is always a second chance; it's never too late.
Interesting sidenote: Han Solo loves Leia more than Anakin loved Padme'. Anakin couldn't give Padme' up; Han could. *ducks*
Yes, very good read! I haven't finished it yet, but I want to!

I highly doubt that Star Wars is a christain movie, seeing as how my local church has CONDEMNED it. That's right completely denounced it. I believe that the actual phrasing went along the lines of it teaches false ideas and condones Budism (sp?). After the preacher got that far, I stopped listening. Mom now wonders why I choose not to attend that particular church, LOL.

I'd not call Star Wars100% "christian", the elements Undercover Jedi mentioned are true. It's an interesting example of mythology and epic story telling like Beowuf. Lucas did snatchitems from various religions. I noticed George's story showed what happens when an order doesn't try to adjust with the times to reach the people it's suppossed toserve. A church can condem something but will they LIVE for God? IMHO, some 'churches' spend far too much time boycotting things and far too little time actually practicing and living a relationship WITH GOd.

I've read about people who criticize "The Chronicles of Narnia" because it has magic and pagan symbols in it. That's despite the fact that most people regard it as a Christian allegory.

Wel some churches and other religions are just plain stupid. No offense to any here. I mean when I was in the Navy at Boot camp I went to the Unitarian servies and I am a christian. I went at first mostly because I got away from my division. That's besides the point, but when I was n there the chapplian (sp?) had tallied those of us in there what we were and then pointed out that all religions are releated in some way or form.
Now the church I did go to.. well one of the youth leaders freaked when I came in wearign a dragon knecklace. Saying it was the devil and all.. now some of it I see but I believe its a p;oint of view to what you do.Now Star wars from a GL interview he said he wanted young people and others to question religion. Is there a god.. stuf like that..
besides If I didnt have star wars growing up I think I would have commited suicide at on point du to a hard life in the school system and other stuff. Some things are just left better alone. My old church too COndemed Harry Potter as well.. I mean big red firetruck.. teach kids that its a fairy tale..

I should say that my last post in this thread was meant to me sarcastic. My local church is MIGHTY weird when it comes to religinon, and I do have to say that Star Wars does have a few christian influences. That being said, doesn't every movie have a at least one religious influence? I think that it wasn't MEANT to be a chirstian movie, it was just written as good vs. evil, which is pretty much religion in it's most raw form.

I do look at star wars as a christian movie. When i took my mom to episode 3 she said that palpatine was just like the devil. Manipulating everyone and promising you everything until in the end you screwed yourself. Anakin is alot like jesus being born of no earthly father and being the chosen one...think about it...

Though there are elements of many religions in Star Wars, I prefer to keep the two mutually exclusive. Sure Han says he'll see the Deck Officer in Hell, but I do my best to ignore that line. In the Jedi Order, there is no creation mythology. That is one of my favourite things about it. Jedi doesn't tell you where you come from, it's just a way of life. On a related note, it doesn't reward you for being good or punish you for being bad. You create your own rewards and punishments in the way you use the Force. To sum up, I just don't like to mix my fantasy stories. After all, it would be pretty weird if Aslan showed up to battle Voldemort.
