Palpatine got messed up from the lightning because he was casting it not because he was getting hit. that is why he looks so weird in the original trilogy because he casts lighting so much.

the movie made it seem that he was being really hurt by it. maybe just to throw off mace windu... lies, deciet, mistrust are the ways of the sith. trust him we cannot

In the novelization, he actually makes a remark (after his face has turned to that of an old Shar-Pei) that he "liked the face of Palpatine", which makes me wonder if maybe he was using some kind of Sith trick (?) to hide his true face...

Actually if you pay close attention, Mace is blocking the lighting with his saber and is reflecting it back into Palpatine's face as he pushes his saber closer to him. He was probably disfigured because it was all concnetrated at his face but when Luke was being electrocuted, it was evenly spread throughout his body and it was continous. Palpatine kept taking breaks when zapping him.

Also I think in the beginning of one of the novels luke talks about how much he needs to recover from the lightning.

And along with what BakaNeko is saying about the lighting coursing all over Luke's body and not just his face, let's not forget that Luke was a very strong Jedi. Remember, Anakin got a blast of lighting directed at him from Dooku in Episode 2. It didn't disfigure him, it just immobolized him for a short period. Palpatine was blasting a huge amount at Mace because he was trying to kill him, so when that amount of evilness was transferred back to him, from Mace's lightsaber, his face caught the full brunt of it.

I read somewhere that backed up what I think that he looks like that normally, hiding it from all others (I think in the new Insider it was). I think he just no longer hid his real face. JMD

I dont think thats his "real" face. When he battle with Mace and was getting hit with his own lightning, he face didnt just go from human looking to wrinkles, you see it gradually become deformed the longer he gets hit. Also when he is addressing the Senate, he says the failed assassination attempt on his life by the Jedi left him deformed.

look there is a book that says that's why he's messed up, because he used force lightning too much. It just came out I forget the name though.

A long time ago, I thought the RP books said that lightning couldn't be deflected.
Glad George Lucas took my side on that argument.

It is entirely possible he was hiding his face - Luke does it in a novel (The Crystal Star by Vonda N Macintyre); completely changes his facial appearance and height so that he isn't recognised.
