I just read that article in The SW Insider about Palpy and the "hidden" face-
The idea was it was his evil face that was real all along- Palpatine's "good senator" face was his mask.
They referred to it as a "Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde" theme but in reverse.
My guess is Mace deflecting the lightning made Palpatine weak and unable to maintain his "good" face, revealing his true self.
It would also easliy explain why Luke did not become deformed by the Sith lightning- he wasn't trying to maintain a changed look or mask.

From what I've read in the novelization of ROTS, it said that the flesh and bone were melting, so I'm guessing the deformity was directly because of the force lightning being concentrated in just that area. I think the reference to the 'face of Palpatine' was more a reference to the psychological mask of acting like a nice guy, rather than just being Evil Let's not forget, that in ROTS, Palpatine isn't a young man by any stretch of the imagination, so when he appears in ROTJ, there's another 20 years adding onto the deformity from the Force Lightning. Just my .2 c

If u read the book where Han Solo buys Dathomir, the Nightsisters all have horrible face because of their use of the Dark Side. One of the good characters even uses the Force to kill a Nightsister and has a blood-vessel explode in her face, givin her a massive bruise (which give the Nightsisters their characteristic faces) Just thought id slip that i sumwhere

Yeah, thats the 1, Belden. It concerns the Force Witches of Dathomir. The Jedi Academy ship Chu'unthor crashed on the planet, and Yoda and the other masters were unable to get it out of the swamp due to inteference from the Nightsisters. It also, i think, introduces the Hapes Cluster, with Prince Isolder and Chum'da. Han Solo wins the planet from a Drackmarian to try and win Leias hand... Look, it'll take too long 2 explain. Just get from the libraryor summat. I recommend it 2 any Star Wars fan. Aint the best book, but ive read worse (Lost City of the Jedi, anyone...)
