I didn't know much about EpI until it came out either. Ironic since it had more multimedia nightmare than the other two.
After reading some of the early SW treatments at Starkiller - the Jedi Bendu script website - Anakin was a boy there....

Back in '84 or '85 an old roommate from collage and I were at a SI-FI Con in Chicago ... one of the sellers has "outlines" labeled Star Wars Episode 1, 2 and 3 ... He bought them and squirreled them away after we read through them ... We had no Idea how authentic they might be, but we pondered what the movies would be like if these were true ... now when Episode I came out 15 or so years later, from what I remember the basic story was close.
In the outline, as I remember it, Obi-Wan Kenobi a newly knighted Jedi Knight was sent to a planet to stop a revolt, and ends up on Tatooine to get help from his brother Owen, who was in Jedi training, but failed and became a farmer, when he discovers a young boy that was strong in the Force ... etc.
I have lost contact with my old roommate, but if I can find him I'm asking for copies of those "outlines" ...

wow... if you ever get a hold of them, I'd love to read them sometime! Whether or not they have any authenticity, it's interesting to see what the idea was, and how close it may have come to the actual movies!

When Ep. I came out I was sort of disappointed like many others from what I read. Couldn't stand Jar Jar, etc... But over the years, I kind of eased my critique of the movie. I still don't like Jar Jar, but I have come to accept it for what it is and the lightsaber battle between Obi, Quie Gon and Maul is the best ever, IMO... Read the Secret History of Star Wars for a very detailed account of all the early drafts and ideas that George Lucas had for his Star Wars movies... www.secrethistoryofstarwars.com

I believe there is a book called 'Star Wars: The Annotated Screenplays' that has the actual drafts and completed scripts. Not sure if it's available though. You might want to search for that...
the prequels were all written by George Lucas. Jonathan Hales was brought in very late to spice up some of the dialog in Ep. II but he really didn't do all that much with it...
As for the original trilogy, George penned A New Hope. The first draft of Empire was written by Leigh Brackett. George didn't like it much so he rewrote a lot of it. Even though he did the main writing of it, he still credited Leigh with writing the screenplay. (Leigh died just a couple of months after completing her script)
And Lawrence Kasdan wrote ROTJ with George looking over his shoulder all the while...
so the end of it all is that George pretty much was involved with all of them very heavily...

I was ok with ep. 1...but was totally confused after ep.2! I was like 'what are the stormtroopers doing with the good guys?!' That was because they were orginally for the Republic, but in truth were only for the Emperor himself
