I was originally gonna write this as an "Anyone out there a Steve Vai fan?" thread. The way I figured it, the thread would decend into a general discussion of music. So go ahead and talk about watever you like in the world of music, but if you are a Steve Vai fan, be sure to include that. In the usual tradition of talking about the subject of the thread when you open it, I'll start on my little thing about music. I like about any music. Rap and Country are about the only things I stay away from. I actually do listen to some little bits of Country, but you wouldn't catch me dead listening to Rap. I was brought up on the Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd, with a side of good ole Blues. I really enjoy music and I always listen to anything new. I dont care for some of the newer stuff like H.I.M or whatnot, but some people do and that's just fine. That's about it. Dont let this thread die y'all! Have a nice day!

Ah... Steve Vai! My fav album by him is "Passion and Warfare"... love the bass on that one! I never saw him, but I did see Satriani with DreamTheater a few years ago. I'm a huge YES fan. In high school it was all about the Who, and I'm a long time fan of the Moody Blues, except I stopped seeing them live about 10 years ago because the shows started to to get very tiresome. Other favs are Led Zeppelin, Kansas, Styx, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, Van Halen, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Stevie Ray Vaughn... that's the old stuff. Funny I don't listen to it as much anymore... only in spurts. Nowadays it's more of a variety of stuff, and I rotate what I listen to quite often, because I really don't watch tv or anything, I just have music playing pretty much all the time. I just loaded my Ipod with Yes, Dreamtheater, Steve Vai, Rick Wakeman, songs from Phantom of the opera and Moulin Rouge (must hear Ewan singing once a day ), Massive Attack, Travis Tritt, Oasis, Gin Blossoms, Yellow Second, Pink Floyd, Coldplay, Nirvana... and much much more I can't even remember... I like stuff that's musically dynamic and experimental. Also love to listen to pieces that feature the cello and the oboe, or the flute and violin. Love the blues jam, too! I just got tickets to see Joshua Bell... he's the violin player who did the soundtrack for the movie "The Red Violin". That movie reminds me of the Steve Vai story that says he mixed his blood with the paint for one of his guitars! That's just too cool!

I tend to be more of a heavy metal type like Rob Zombie. I also like Green Day and Evan Essence. Country music doesn't bother me since ive had to listen to it my entire life in my moms car. I can't stand rap, all they sing about is drugs, violence and sex.

I am a massive blues fan . I play acoustic blues at pubs all the time, I usually do it for free aswell - I just love music. Steve Vai is a bit too much of a showman for me, although he is alot more musically coherent than alot of those other shredders out there. If I had to listen to insanely fast guitar work, Vai would be the one. But as it stands I much prefer deep bends and melodic soloing - my favourite guitarist is Eric Clapton, and he takes up most of the space on my ipod, but I also like Dire Straits, Lynyrd Skynyrd, John Mayer, and any acoustic guitar based songs. I tend to like individual songs alot more than artists or bands as a whole - I rarely buy albums, with the exception of Clapton. I always had the impression that bands like Evanescence were a bit shallow - the frontgirl from that band said herself that she picked the name of the band out of a dictionary because it sounded cool, before even knowing what it meant

"Passion and Warfare" changes pace quite often, throughout. It's not just a series of lightning fast riffs. Guitar playing doesn't have to be fast to be good. Did I mention that I think Steve Howe ranks awesome, too? Rap is more of a social/subcultural statement that I can't relate to, and club music is just horribly grating to my ears... although my husband loves it! And you play blues guitar? Very nice!

My favorite type of music tends to be Orchestral (movie scores), Classical, nearly all genres of Christian rock, 50's music, most of the Beatles' first and second albums, and some Country. Favorite band? Definately Lifehouse! Never heard of Steve Vai or half those bands or artists mentioned. I've never been much into the Mainstream. Inothers words, if it has a good melody and/or a fairly good beat and the lyrics are positive, I'll usually listen to it!

And Poison's "Ride the Wind".
Also Dokken, in that genre, although I don't consider them a glam band.

Never heard of Steve Vai or half those bands or artists mentioned. I've never been much into the Mainstream. Heh Steve Vai and the bands we've mentioned are hardly what you call mainstream. Mainstream these days seems to be nothing but what MTV calls "R'n'B" - but that stuff all sounds the same to me, even more so than trance music. The thing about R'n'B these days is that includes neither rythm nor blues - kind of depressing that most of the people who listen to this music have no idea what its roots really are. I am actually a fan of the old style rap - basically back when they didnt have any money. It had a good beat, it wasnt over-sampled or just blatantly re-hashed like todays stuff, and was very poetic. The end of rap came when Eminem created D12, but before that it was all good. Strange how things can change so much inside whilst remaining the same cosmetically. I guess thats why I went back to traditional Blues - it is consistent in its meaning and its musical form. The fact of it is that Blues is one of the oldest musical stylings to remain true and still be relatively popular, with new albums coming out even now - second only to classical music of course. It just makes you wonder if any of the music that is on MTV now is going to last anywhere near as long as these old styles have. Every band today is trying to do something new - and the irony in it is that many people, including myself, got bored of "new" long ago
