Chapter One
The landspeeder flew across the desolate deserts of Tatooine, heading towards the city of Anchorhead.
“I can’t believe Master Darkfire is making me stay with you,” Jedi Apprentice Linn said over the roar of the engine.
“Master Darkfire’s mission is extremely dangerous,” Jedi Master Leo Zaar replied.
“I know, I know,” she replied, “I don’t yet have enough training, you already told me that like five times.”
Leo slowed down the landspeeder as it approached the gate leading into Anchorhead.
“Master Darkfire has been away on this mission for a week,” Leo said, “He should be back later today. We’ll meet him at the Anchorhead spaceport. In the mean time, there are some supplies of bacta in the back of the landspeeder that the council wants us to deliver to the spaceport.”
“That’ll be an exciting mission,” Linn replied sarcastically.
“You’ll get to go on a dangerous mission soon enough,” Leo replied, “And when you do, you won’t be looking forward to dangerous missions anymore.”
He slowed the landspeeder to a stop. The gate to Anchorhead was closed. A group of thugs stood in front of it.
“Who are you?” Leo asked, “Can you let us in?”
“My name’s Desan, and this is my gate!” the leader of the gang yelled, “If you want to get into Anchorhead, it’s gonna cost you 200 credits!”
“Well, I guess we’ll just pay him and be on our way then,” Leo said.
“Hey!” Linn yelled, “This is a public gate! You can’t be charging us credits!”
“I’m so scared,” Desan replied mockingly, “What’s the little ten year old gonna do?”
“I’m thirteen!” Linn replied, “And I’m a Jedi!”
Linn looked at Leo. “Come on!” she said, “Let’s show these Anchorhead scum who’s boss!”
“This doesn’t have to turn into a fight,” Leo said.
Desan approached the landspeeder. He pulled out a blaster and aimed it at Leo’s head. The other thugs did the same.
“Now cough up those credits!” Desan said.
Leo could tell that Linn was getting angry. He only hoped she wouldn’t do anything stupid like attacking the thugs with her lightsaber. If she did that, he would end up with a blaster bolt in his head real fast.
Leo waved his hand in front of Desan’s face. “You’ll let us go through for free,” Leo said.
“I’ll let you go through for free,” Desan replied a moment later, “Come on boys, open the gate!”
The gate was opened and Leo drove the landspeeder through.
Chapter Two
He drove the landspeeder to the spaceport, where they dropped off the bacta supplies. Master Darkfire, who the council had ordained to be Linn’s Jedi Master, had not yet arrived.
“We got some time to burn,” Leo said, “Let’s stop into the local cantina.”
They entered the Anchorhead Cantina, walked past the live band playing jazzy music on alien instruments, and sat down at a booth in a corner.
A Twi’Lek waitress approached them. “May I help you?” she asked.
“We’ll each have a cup of hot chocolate,” Leo said.
“Okay,” the Twi’Lek replied, and walked off to another booth.
“What?” Linn exclaimed, “You didn’t even let me pick what I wanted!”
“Considering that hot chocolate is the only alcohol free drink in this dump, that’s probably a good thing,” Leo replied.
“Explain to me why you used a Jedi Mind trick on those thugs,” Linn said, changing the subject, “What they were doing was clearly illegal. If we attacked them together, we could have made an example of them, you know, to help stop stuff like that from happening again.”
“A Jedi’s duty is to keep the peace,” Leo replied, “Attacking them would be the least peaceful solution.”
“But a Jedi also seeks justice,” Linn said, “and letting criminals go free is not justice!”
“There are local authorities around here to take care of that,” Leo said, “And if the authorities really have a big problem with these thugs, they’d inform the council to send over a Jedi to take care of them. But until that happens, we leave it to the authorities. Remember, a Jedi must always focus on the mission at hand, no matter how boring the mission is. In this case, our mission was to deliver the bacta supplies to the spaceport. That required getting through the gate, but since apprehending the thugs was not part of the mission, we had to just get through the gate as peacefully as possible, and complete the rest of the mission.”
"Whatever," Linn replied.
Chapter Three
The Twi’Lek came back with the drinks. “That will be fifty credits,” she said.
“Fifty credits!” Linn exclaimed, “What a rip-off!”
“Here you go,” Leo said. He handed the credits to the Twi’Lek, and she walked away.
“Why didn’t you just mind-trick her into giving you the drinks for free?” Linn asked.
“That’s something a Sith would do,” he replied.
“But you used a mind-trick on Desan at the gate,” she said.
“I had a blaster at my head, it’s not like I had much of a choice,” Leo said, “It was the only peaceful way to get out of there with my head in one peace. Well, I suppose I could have paid them two hundred credits, but they don’t deserve that kind money for something so illegal as blocking a public gate.”
“Once I learn how to do mind tricks, I’ll use them to get everything I want,” Linn said.
“You have much to learn,” Leo replied, “The reason Master Darkfire hasn’t taught you things like that yet is because you’re not ready for them. You’ll use them the wrong ways.”
“But if the Force is the tool of a Jedi, can’t we use it any way we want?” Linn asked.
Leo replied, “What has Master Darkfire been teaching you? The Force is not a tool. It controls our destinies, and it is more complex and powerful then anyone could comprehend. To think that we have complete control over it, or that we can just treat it like a slave, is foolish!”
Before Linn could even think about what Leo had just said, she spotted Desan and his gang entering the cantina.
Chapter Four
“There’s Desan,” Linn said, “This is our chance to do a Jedi’s duty, to keep the peace by fighting evil!”
“What’s so peaceful about fighting?” Leo asked, “It doesn’t matter what kind of criminal scum those people are, attacking them would still be illegal, much more illegal then standing in front of a public gate! A Jedi will fight in defense when attacked, but a Jedi does not attack an enemy! That’s something a Sith would do!”
Desan didn’t seem to notice that Leo and Linn were in the back corner of the cantina, not yet anyway.
“But what about the rebellion?” Linn asked, “That’s what got the Republic where it is today!”
“The Galactic Rebellion was not an attack on the Empire,” Leo replied, “It was the remnants of the Old Republic defending themselves from the attacks of the Empire!”
Linn grabbed her lightsaber. “If you don’t want to do the duty of a Jedi by fighting against evil, then I’ll do it without you!”
“Wait!” Leo exclaimed, “Do you want to see how a Jedi keeps the peace?
Leo stood up. “This is how a Jedi keeps the peace!” he declared.
With that said, Leo turned around, and walked right out the back door of the cantina.
Now Linn understood. Attacking Desan’s gang would only leave people wounded or dead. Nobody would benefit from such a fight. Leo was walking away, but by doing so, he was preventing a fight, and keeping the peace.
“Wait for me!” Linn said. She followed Leo out the back door.
They walked back to the spaceport together. Linn had just learned a very valuable lesson, and Anchorhead was now at peace.
