Will continue prayers for all.
Cem-Ji: yes, with bipolar, it's all about the medication. More and more we are discovering that mental illness is largely chemical balances in the brain.

Oh, that's discouraging. Hope she does well, even so!

UPDATE: The first battery of Danine's blood work can back normal ... Nothing unexpected, looks like the steroids were giving the false readings. Waiting for the surgeon to find out the next tests before surgery. keeping our sabres crossed.

Oh, my. It is so unfortunate to have such problems at such a young age. Will keep you in my prayers.
Consumer Reports on Health, April 2006 has 4 pages on treatment options for back pain. It's normally only available by subscription. Don't know if it would suggest anything you don't already know, but if you PM me your address, I'll send a copy.

Here is the latest in her own words:
Hi friends! Well, I told you I would keep you up-dated as I found things out about my health. Well, unfortunately, the news isn't that great and so I haven't been too keen on sharing it, but here goes. As our saga left off, I thought I was going in for a procedure that would help heal my herniated disc. It was, however, a diagnostic test where they inject ink into the disc and then try and recreate my pain. Unfortunately, the compression was so bad, they couldn't even get the needle into the disc. So Dr. Morgan, the pain specialist, increased my pain meds and sent me to a back surgeon. He looked at the MRI, took new x-rays and was ready to either fuse my vertebrae or do a procedure to create space between them. However when I described what my biggest concerns were like, losing the feeling in the lower part of my body, having my legs not respond when I wanted them to move, and having so much weakness, that I couldn't walk up a set of stairs. He said that these things were not consistent with my herniated disc. He also did a bit of muscle testing on my upper body and that was extremely weak, too. I flippantly said, "This almost seems like MS." I had no idea he would go with that. He didn't want to proceed with the disc problem until there was more information about these other symptoms. Well the Workman comp guy, wouldn't do any tests that weren't related to my low back. Fortunately Dr. Morgan intervened and ordered a MRI of my brain and neck and billed my own health insurance. Well the results came back showing these white lesions on my brain, which is one of the things that defines Multiple Sclerosis. Dr, Morgan said that the thrush that I had for 6 weeks, the lovely crop of facial hair I have developed and my 66 day and counting period are all due to the 5 corticosteroid injections that I had between Oct.20th and Feb 3rd. I am being referred to an OB/GYN to take care of the menstrual thing and I am hoping that some hormones will take care of it, though they may do a DNC and my family DR. told me on Friday that he had a patient a few months ago who had to have a hysterectomy because of the injection related problems. So I was at my family Dr, Bob Young on Friday because my blood pressure was pretty high all week. On Friday it was 140/106. So he put me on blood pressure meds which should start working in about 2 weeks. After talking to him, he gave me a 60% chance that I do have MS. I am waiting to see a neurologist to confirm or refute the MS diagnosis. Of course the 1st neurologist we contacted gave me an appointment for July 10th. So I am going through the list of neurologists in our network to see if I can get a sooner appointment. Workman's comp won't do anything for my back and leg pain until I have a diagnosis on this other stuff. So that is where I am. I was let go from my Teacher Assistant job on April 5th, which I took when the tutor money ran out at the end of Feb. It was a long term sub, temp position, so she didn't have to give me a reason, which she didn't, to end the job. So I went active on the substitute teacher list, and have been subbing since the 12th. It is more money and less stress, so I guess it is a good move. Jim and I are working together to get the kids to school each day, but they have been very flexible and I am very proud of them. SO that is where I am. I would appreciate all of your positive thoughts and prayers for me. I will let you know when I know more. Take care! Danine

That's alot for anyone to handle. She sounds determined to beat this... tell her chin up. Take each day as it comes. There will be answers. I'm sending prayers her way, and to everyone who has posted here and is in need.

Oh, my. MS would be a difficult diagnosis. Of course, it would also depend on which of the 3 subtypes. I have a friend who has been living with relapsing/remitting type for about 10 years and continues to be able to work. However, she has had to stop the heavy lifting involved in keeping up their hobby farm.
My prayers continue.
