I can relate to Nova's predicament(sp)...lol When I lived in SC...people found out that I was an animal lover. They started letting out their unwanted pets in my yard. I ended up with 52 cats and 11 dogs in one year. I contacted an animal league and they helped me feed them and eventually found them homes. I finally had to put up a sign in my yard pointing them in the direction of the Animal League. Almost every morning I would go out and find a dog or cat tied to my carport. They seemed really happy to see me and I welcomed them into my home....sad thing is they were all great animals, which leads me to the realization that the owners were not good people.

Animals have a keen sense of preservation. Cats are luckier though. They are normally loners which gives them the ability to survive out in the wild. Dogs, however are pack animals and need the closness of others. When I see a dog loose out by himself, I worry, but a cat I don't as much. In my town, you just don't see stray animals. People here seem to care. There are the few exceptions though. We have a very large animal rights group here.

Is that a piranah, like in the fish? I ask because I have a dog that is a Pariah from Austrailia. Part of the Dingo family......I had a friend in Chicago that had a piranah fish. It was huge.......They had him in a 100 gallon tank.

We kept them in a couple of playpens in the living room. Just to many G pigs for one place. We also at times had, horses, ponies, goats, a pig, chickens, ducks, rabbits, ferrets, cats, dogs, fish, birds, newts, turtles (I found one after hurricane Donna, and had it for about 15 years) an occassional reptile, rats, mice, gerbils, hamsters, a monkey(YUCK, my sister brought it home) and a few other things I've forgotten, Mother didn't mind, she didn't like the reptiles though, anything that had fur, or feathers or swam was OK. She'd have had a fit, If I'd told her about that first job!!!

My daughter has a turtle she rescued, that was the size of a half dollar when she got it. It now weighs 3 pounds! There is a sign in our pet store that says they won't sell turtles anymore to households. Says that they carry salmonila......they sell them for school aquariums where the kids won't be touching them...That is so weird. Didn't know that about turtles...

[glow=blue,3,0000]That stinks. Turtles (and tortises) are alot of fun. Especially when they're little...[/glow]

I think tortises are ok. I think it is just the water turtles, and especially the ones in aquariums that aren't kept clean. They will grow bacteria on their shells. That is one of the reasons you see wild turtles sunning themselves. The bacteria can eventually kill them. My daughter scrubs her turtle's shell everytime she cleans his aquarium. She also has a special light that helps kill the bacteria. Unfortunately, alot of people get turtles for their kids thinking that they are a low maintainence pets, but like any living animal, they are not maintainance free by a long shot and they suffer and feel pain. That is the reason that pet stores have creacked down on selling them. It is more for the protection of the turtle than the people.

WOw Guinea pigs are great. My sis and I had one as children. He was chocalte brown, ginger red brown and white. Named pepper. He moved hidding in large shirt pockets. I had a long wide pocket in an sweatshirt (One you can place bothhands in and claspthem together inside.) Pepper would sit in there for hours, cooing and making his "I'm content" nosies. He'd throw a fit and squeak loudly when I take him out. Silly pig wanted to stay IN my pcoket.

My mom-in-law runs a animal rescue league in the Detroit area. We have fostered many puppies and kitties. It's very sad to see how many animals are abused and neglected.
