Not sure if there's a thread for this one already. I've searched but can't find one. I've read some people finding out some unfortunate things about wearing costumes at conventions. For example, I've seen lots of references to people using stitching or velcro to hold tabards in place to keep them from falling off. Also, some people have been known to make a lightsaber bag so that their MR lightsabers can be put carried. Anyone have any tips for convention Jedis? Any practical difficulties that can be highlighted before newbies like me hit the convention halls? I'm sure going to the loo takes a lot longer than normal while in costume

Tips... hmmm... well make sure you have either pockets in your pants, or enough room in your pouches to hold all your stuff... wallet, phone, camera, gum, keys, etc. My pants have no pockets, so my pouches have to to all the work. A neck strap works well for larger cameras, but you can't hide it when someone is photographing you. I bought a slim style camera specifically for conventions, and made a leather pouch to fit it.

Leda's suggestion is key! Pouches to hold your stuff are essential.
Another thing I found out is that tying your lanyard, with your badge attached, of course, around your belt helps it to not hide the front of your costume.

Agree with the above. I just made a pouch to hold my camera on my belt (posted photos in the belt and pouch forum, below). Tabbards seem to always slide off the shoulders. So you'll need some method to keep them up. Velcro works for most, but it didn't for me. I use large snaps. home.comcast.net/%7Ejedikai/JediBags.pdf is my small tutorial on how to carry important belongings at cons but not destroy the look of your costume. I've made a long pocket inside my robe to carry the detachable blade to my saber... public.fotki.com/Kait/star_wars/host/pocket-1.htmlI enjoy making my own ID badge to indicate affiliation: public.fotki.com/Kait/star_wars/host/tjaname_badge.html I've offered to make them and email to individuals, so let me know...they are only available to full members, though.

Another thing... comfotable boots!!!!! Too many times people's boots look great, but the feet are in agony after a day. Cushioned or gel insoles help. At CIII we were all sitting in our hotel room comparing blisters! Bring bandaids just in case, and to protect sore spots. And when buying boots, make sure they are loose enough to wiggle your toes. Feet spead out when you're on them all day.

If the boots are new, wear them a lot before the convention.
And better than bandaides, bring that second skin stuff which sticks better than a bandaide and will prevent a red spot becoming a blister. Even if it does, the second skin can be worn over the blister.

I do and agree with all of the above tips. :-) Also extra batteries for the camera. Rechargables are best, always have 2 sets already charged and stored ina pouch. The charger and 2 more sets of batteries in the room. (Not counting the charged batteries all ready in the camera.)
Some of my pants have pockets, some don't. My three pouches do all the work. I'm thinking of making a resealable pocket/pouch in the obi that sits in front of the stomach, for storing paper money/credit cards.

yes, they saved my feet at D*C: after 2 years, my boots can still create a blister on my heel, especially in the hot weather of Atlanta.

Boots and blisters... oh my!
In the Boy Scouts I wore two pairs of socks with my hiking boots. The first pair was a light weight pair of men's dress socks. (Women may want to wear an old pair of nylons cut down to sock length) The outer pair of socks can be regular tube socks, or hiking socks. Some socks made for hiking or running will have a little more cushioning on the heel and ball of the foot.
Wearing two pairs allows your foot to move more freely inside the boot, and helps prevent blisters. I have hiked for over five miles before, and never had a blister.

Indeed! I learned the two pairs of socks trick when I was in Air Cadets as a teenager.
I've been doing it for well over 20 years now! ;D

Is that like the moleskin pads? I use the moleskin* (Dr. Scholls) pads, plus the 2-pair socks trick. They work great for me. ~ Koda *no moles were harmed in the composing of this message.
