My next project is a very battle-worn Jedi General. For this costume I will be burning blaster holes and tearing and shredding the sleeves and bottom of my wool cloak. I'll also do the same (to a lesser degree) to this old revision of my Jedi costume. Since this is a one-time shot kinda' thing, I'm looking for some advice, creative vision, warnings, etc. Here is the progress I've made so far on that costume: Semper, General Fidelis

Advice? Just stay clear of the smoke detectors! ;D
I think the best way to simulate a blaster bolt is with a burning stick.... or a cigar... and smudge the ashes outward in streaks. And for a Mustafar look, drop burning cinders on it. If you have access to an airbrush, that would make it easier to get the blasted effect.... like ejecta from a crater...
And if you have any fabric left from the tunic or you can get similar fabric... experiment first!

Sistersola (costume mod at force.net) did the burned obiwan www.sistersola.com/obiwan.html Though she doesn't say exactly how she did it, there is an email link. I don't think she's back from her holiday trip yet (she's a friend on LJ and she hasn't posted since Christmas).

Have you got any leftover fabric pieces from your costume? Use them to test out buring techniques. Mark the places you want to burn and rip with a fabric pencil and look them over to see if you have got them right before doing anything.
Note about burning fabric. Any fabric that has a synthetic content to it will melt, with shiny, hard edges, when burned. If it's all natural fiber, it will turn to ash at the edges.

[glow=red,2,300]Thank you all very much. That was just the kind of help I was looking for! And thank you Kai for the link.[/glow]I do happen to have extra fabric from both my old tunic and cloak (knew it would come in handy one day ). So with this great advice I think I'll proceed as follows with the extra material: - burn fabric to see if it melts or not (not sure about the tunic fabric) - use cigar to burn blaster holes (great idea!) / paint is also an option - scrape with sharp metal and wire brush to know what to expect - map out areas of cloak and tunic with seamstress chalk that will be to burned and shredded (so elementary, but I hadn't considered that) I can't wait to start! ;D I'll post progress pics as soon as I have made some progress. And keep good notes so you can use the photos and notes to write a tutorial which can then go on our website! eh?

I like the cigar idea. I was thinking BBQ style charcoal could make an interesting effect.
I still want to do that on my costume at some point.

That's a great link you posted, Kai...
It looks like the blacked fabric effect may have been done with an airbrush, since it creates a mist that simulates airborne soot particles.

Great idea as well. plus you can make burned "lines" with the red hot poker similar to what being close to a lightsaber could make.

The poker is a great idea. I didn't have time to move on this project this weekend, but next weekend will be a long one for me. I'm going to try all of these ideas on some leftover material and see what I get. I'll be sure to post pics. BTW, does anyone have any extra time laying around? I seem to be running short lately... I can't in good conscience burn or wreck a Jedi outfit unless it nataurally happens. But lookingforward to seeing your project

I know what you mean about trashing a Jedi costume Ky-Wan Zann. This is just an extra that I am doing this to though. It currently serves me no purpose. Actually, I let my Uncle-in-Law wear it to work last Halloween. I'd hate to sell it, and I've been wanting to make this battle-worn version for a very long time. So rather than collecting dust in my closet, I'll have another functional Jedi costume that I'll love to wear.
I also plan to get some good makeup and put a scar across my face. I'd love to put one across one eye and get a "dead" eye contact to go with it.

I suppose burning could be considered a type of weathering. Volcanic weather! lol.... Raining cinders...
