Thanks for the kind words... but believe me, there was lots of time and even swearing involved in making mine... at some point I wanted to switch to another pattern. Oh we were swearing, I remember sitting upstairs one night and I heard a string of curses rattled off go downstairs and my grandmother is at war with her sewing machine and the Tunic. She broke one of her machines needles and another two for it working on some other part of the costume. The force was not with her in terms of making the tunic. That or I wandered off to the 'darkside' of the fabric section and bought Sith made fabric lol. Could explain why the needles were busting.

Needles break for lots of no good reasons, especially the last one you have in the middle of the night, with a deadline. AGGGH! If it continuues to do that, have the timing checked, but, it might just have bent enough (fraction of a millimeter) to hit the stich plate or the foot, or snagged on a tread or.........

ive broken my fair share of needles, in the stupidest of circumstances. curses were thrown around, and i had to stop a few times when making my renn fair outfit, and just drink a soda or something, just to calm down.

True, many's the time I've threatened the sewing machine with a sledge hammer or the window toss. Then I'll take a break, sometimes it will then cooperate, but not always. My favourite machine put me thru that recently, didn't like a fabric that I was using, aggh! Tension underside was a mess, broke 1/2 a dozen needles in one night, a few other tricks as well, but would work just fine on every other fabric I was using that night, nearly drove me nuts, and of course, I had a deadline! I've always got a deadline! So, what does your Renn Faire outfit look like? Are you a SCAdian? Or just a Renn faire rat? Funny how many of us there are around here.

On a related note, does anybody have experience with synthetic leather? I'd prefer not to use natural leather, if I can, and was wondering how it held up in pouch-making, et cetera. Thanks! A bit of a *bump*, but yes, I used synth-leather for my tabbards. It works fine for tabbards, but I wouldn't want to use it for something like a belt-pouch, certainly not as the primary material. If you were to make the pouch from something solid, but then use the synth-leather as a 'coating' for that material, it might work

Yeah, pleather is not that strong and will strain and tear at pouch seams if you put any stress on it, if you use it for pouches, then "FLAT- LINE" it in a sturdy fabric. To flat - line, cut fabric lining and outer fabric at the same time, or exactly the same, sew them together at the same time so that the lining and the outer fabric are joined at the seams as one peice.

*uses pleather* The store claims it's vinyl, but I have worked with vinyl, and this stuff is definitely pleather. Yayness. I actually had to make my obi ouit of the stuff since I had no spare linen fabric, and it came out rather nice...

Pleather is just another term for vinyl, the costume and clothing industries use that euphemism, because it sounds more real or natural than vinyl, other than that, it does come in several weights and finishes.

Odd, I'd always understood there was something of a difference. The backing of the material sure seems to be different, because there's the stuff with the cotteny backing, an dthen the stuff with the touch interwoven type backing, which I often try to use now

True, but they're still PVC in one form or another, that is Poly Vinyl Clhoride, backed or not, it's still pleather, with grain, scales, or patent finish etc. it's not all bad, (except environmentaly)and it does have it's uses, wouldn't be to bad at all it it would breathe. Got to go bowling.
