goatees are also known as circle beards and so I'd let them pass. It's nice to see another guy standing up for the beard. I've worn a beard off and on for years (and am wearing one at the moment) and so I'm glad to see this topic come up. Qui Gon Jinn and Obi wan wore beards and so there is precedent. You know, since Ben wore a beard it seems logical that Luke Skywalker would opt for one as well (continuing the beard trend from Master to padawan as Obi wan did after Qui Gon Jinn). Beards should at least be allowed among male Jedi, if not encouraged. It's all a matter of choice, of course. Ki Adi Mundi wore a goatee, Mace Windu was clean-shaven, and Zez-Kai Ell wore a big moustache (Zez was in KOTOR 2). It's a social thing, but most males cave to social pressure and opt to go clean-shaven. Cowards! J/K it's quite a social statement to wear a beard and it can intimidate some people. After all, a beard is a sign of masculinity and dominance and people feel uncomfortable around bearded men. Haven't you noticed the villainization of facial hair? Why is it that all the bad guys on tv or movies have a beard or other facial hair? Even Scott Peterson fell victim to this a while back... in court he was clean-shaven. But his pictures in the papers showed him with a moustache and a bit of stubble. That's a low blow to facial hair. Scott was guilty and so his guilt intensified the association of facial hair with evil. As a matter of principal I refuse to conform to the clean-shaven masses and I stand in defiance of the feminized white-collar American yuppy thingyroach mentality!
(don't get me started on the thingyroach metaphor. I got rather philosophical at a bar one night and I had a revelation).

The ability to grow a beard was a "right of passage" for me and I grbbed it as soon as puberty hit. I started shaving just before my 13th bday and it took me two years to get my mom to let me grow one.....my dad was all for it. THen after I did she liked it so much on mem that she asked my dad to grow one too.

I wish i could still have my beard. I miss not having to shave. But work demands a clean chin.

One for the record! lol! My husband had a beard once. He came back from a long business trip to Milan with a goatee. I like it, but he is one that does look better without. It depends on the man, I think. It's part of their self image, and the image they choose to project. My husband Oli is clean cut. Short hair, pressed shirt, etc... I convinced him to grow his hair long many years ago, when the kids were little, like 15 years ago. He had a long curly mullet! lol! But he went back to what he prefers about ten years ago. Now I have 1 bearded son and two more with nice long hair! ;D

My husband grew a beard once for the annual Easter play at church, and he looked HORRIBLE! (OK, he looked like a terrorist...) And it was around the time of his birthday, so he carried that awful picture on his driver's license for 5 years. Yuck. On the other hand, some of the other guys in that same play looked really good. I had a guy friend in college that NEEDED one b/c he had no chin. So I agree, it depends on the person, and also the style -- sort of like choosing clothes that are most flattering to one's "shape", whether male or female. But for the guys that CAN wear them, it does increase the "handsome factor". ;D

"There is always a period when a man with a beard shaves it off. This period does not last. He returns headlong to his beard. "
