as far as I understand, the padawans are expected to not grow excess hair, and to grow a braid.
When they become knights, they have the braid off, and they have the possibility to have a beard.
Therefore, a lot of the knights and masters decide to do like I do and not shave unless necessary.

I would say Padawans, no, Knights possibly but longer hair and Masters the same or a beard as well. It all harkens back to the Dark Ages and the state of position. Shows how long you've been in whatever Order or Fellowship of Knights.

If memory serves, during the Crusades period, Knights all had beards because in Islamic cultures beards were a sign of strength. The longer the beard the the more the respect gained. The Templar's all kept their hair short so it would not interfere with their sight while riding.
I wish I could find the article where Ewen was asked when kind of hair style he wore. He said "I have the Jedi Mullet which I sported swimmingly, and Christian will sport it in the next movie."
Remember; "A man with a beard is never alone."

Well it's a moot question for me since I've worn a beard since I was 15.

I think I'd look silly in a beard, make that I know I'd look silly in a beard, I once wore one that was about 3 ft. long!

I say it all depends. I mostlsy agree with Ky-Wan. I would've liked to see Master Yoda with a fu-man-chu myself.

Actually, I was doing a dwarf at a con, many, many years ago. The best part was I forgot the spirit gum remover, you should have seen me trying to get a cab in NY with a face with hacked of hair in every sort of direction, so nice gentleman finally flagged one down for me, I always make sure I pack the removers now.
