Whilst looking at some pics of Obi Wan from RotS, I noticed something in one of the pics that I couldn't place. What is the item hanging from Obi Wan's belt in the following pic, does anyone know? (I'm looking in your direction Justin ) Just wondering

That's his TPM/ATOC saber, seen with the light against one of the metal edges by the blade modulation circuitry (Same detail I used in my saber) The photo might have been taken during a final rehearsal, and they might not have had his ROTS/ANH saber ready so used that one instead...

Well orginally they were going to have Obi-Wan use his TPM saber and you can catch that in the one BTS vid where Lucas says they have to get Obi-Wan from Ewans saber to Alec's saber. You can even see the stunt sabers Ewans used at first were based on the TPM ones, albeit the new style. Guess they canned the idea

Well, I love his epIII saber so I guess its a good thing they did. Personally I think they should have made his TPM/AOTC sabers more like the ANH one as well... it doesnt gel too well that he would build a new one thats so different to his previous one (windvane, location of the activator etc).
Oh well!

In the visual dictionary for ATOC, when it describes Dooku's saber, it says how he set aside his original saber and made a new one that had no connection Master Yoda's saber, as if this is a common practice for a Jedi to do once they attain the rank of Master. Obi-Wan's TPM/ATOC saber was inspired by Qui-Gon's, and there were design similarities that can be seen in the lower grips... In keeping with that tradition, he must have made the ROTS saber for when he was elevated to the Jedi Council (as he didn't have it in Clone Wars)

well as far as make sabers like others peoples, Obi Wan mad a saber like Qui Gons because he was his "master", And Dooku was Yoda's Padawan once apon a time so it seems that since the Master's and Padawans had such a connection and influence that they would tend to build there lightsabers in the likeness of the people who trained them and they looked up too.

Yes, this is exactly the case. However, the point I was trying to illustrate was once a Jedi becomes a Master, they then make another, more personalized saber, which might not have any similarities to their Master's sabers at all, hence Obi-Wan's ROTS saber and Dooku's saber

I've never been a fan of teh "resembling their masters" saber thing.
Especially when you see how Ewan and Liam chose their sabers!

Yep I agree. If Ewan had liked Ki-Adi-Mundis saber design better, all these theories would be out the window!

Hee hee, that's true I much prefer the fictional reason to the real world reason Although, in the original Visual Dictionary, it does say that Luke contructed his saber to resemble Obi-Wan's, and that Vader's saber was much like the one he used as a Jedi learner, just darker.

well just imagen how much it would cost on the computer to make a compleatly new saber for the cgi when they already have cgi copies of sabers already.
Like sidious in a short clip you see him using anis graflex(of lack of graflex but ya know what I mean.)

yeah resembling the sabers thing...nice idea...but apart from lukes and Old Obi-Wan I don't see it.
According to an issue of the sw insider they began using ewans ep 1/2 hilt before they were sure weather to use alecs style or not, when it was decided the hilt was switched.

Like sidious in a short clip you see him using anis graflex(of lack of graflex but ya know what I mean.) Actually, in this case that whole fight had a different beginning. Ani was supposed to arrive before the Windu and co., get knocked out, and Sidious was supposed to use Ani's lightsaber. Lucas scraped the idea 1/2 way through and they switched sabers and reshot some scenes. Except they liked the energy of the fight, and it was fast enough that with a red blade, your eye doesn't notice it at full speed.
