Jedi do not have formal wear as such, but, sometimes do wear slightly more formal looking robes for delicate diplomatic missions where a less battle ready look is needed. They are still practical, but slightly finer in feel/look. I know I read this in one of the novels, but forget exactly which one, hint,( not a EU or NJO, haven't read that many of those)so try the Apprentice or Quest or something like maybe The Approaching Storm, (it might be that) or something of that type.

I've read I think, in the Jedi Apprentice books of the finer clothing being made from silks. Sturdy,.practical and quite strong.

I think of Jedi formal-wear as just meaning that they ironed their tunic, obi and tabards that morning. ;D
If there was ever an occassion for Jedi formal-wear it would have been the end of TPM. Members of the Council showed up for that parade. But it just doesn't look like anyone is wearing anything different than usual, except for Anakin, who was wearing a new outfit. Everyone looked nice and clean and pressed, but the fabrics looked like the everyday ones.
Could the Jedi-formalwear be more of a New Republic thing?

The only thing I think they wear are nicer robes or new tunics, I personally wear a different Lightsaber for ceremonial things. But now that I have two sets of tunics one can be everyday and the others can be nice occasions.

ANi, that's a kick. hehehe.<snickering> Just ironed the tabbods and obi. LOL least it's not as bad as sniffing it to see if it's ok to wear. hehhehe. One thing I'm glad of, I've never smelled 'gamer funk' on a jedi passing by at a con, yet, and I hope I never do. ewww.
I don't know Ky-Wan if the formal were an NJO thing or not, although they do tend to wear traditional jedi garb for special occasions. For the OJO, it could be the same. I've several tunics now that are everyday wear. They'er cotton and silk becuase any synthetic synthetic fabrics down here in the tropics, the wearer would pass out.

Well, I DO think that Jedi wash their clothes before ironing them for formal ocassions! ;D I think that they only do the 'sniff' test on their tunics when they're on those tough missions to planets that don't have self-serve laundry.

The book you're referring to is the Clone Wars novel entitled The Cestus Deception. Obi-Wan dons his dress robes for a dinner party with the planet's politicians (basically). I thought the book was well written, but nothing too spectacular. I imagined that the robes were much more like normal silk - instead of silk noil.

Nice clothing to say the least. I don't see the over robe being made froma shiney silk. It's too light and would flutter all over and give him no protection. If it were a heavy weighted silk blended with maybe chashmire, it'd have good weight.
Ani, I bet they'd get themselves soaked in a lake and use the force to dry off and remove the dirt. Force dry cleaners, dirt hasn't a ghost of achance.:-D In some books they were washing their stuff in a lake beating them on a rock and everything.<shrugs>

Dress Jedi tunics in cream/brown dupioni silk. Hmmm, yum. But they'd have to be dry cleaned to preserve that crisp dupioni texture.
When I have some time, I may leaf through the Cestus Deception to try to find that reference.

I have no idea about the robe itself. Oh, and Kai, I don't actually own the book, but when you're looking for the spot, it should be after Obi Wan and the barrister arrive at the palace (after he and Kit Fisto separate). Not at the very beginning, but certainly before the book really kicks it into action mode. I believe they are getting ready for a big dinner...

I've washed Dupioni, but hung it to dry, and then pressed it, I like it a bit softer then the really crispy finish, I think it drapes better. Silk Dupioni robes would be beautiful. I've got some silk broadcloth sandwashed that I'm going to make a set of robes from, nice a flowy, very soft & drapey. This might be for a DCon special set.

Hey Kai,
I just found the reference while at Powell's today. It's in the first paragraph of chapter 25.
