I don't have the book afterall. I listened to it as an audio book. Will look it up myself at the store tomorrow.

Here's the quote, on page 144 at the beginning of Chap 25 of The Cestus Deception: "Obi-Wan's formal robe was much like his everyday dress: flowing from floor to shoulder in a cascade of burnt sienna, but woven of demicot silk".
I've never heard of that kind of silk, so I did a Google search and got this from the Star Wars Encycolopedia on theForce.net: "Demicot this was a species of swift-moving insect. The fine webbing exuded by the demicot was collected and woven into a silky fabric."
So, dress robe (and tunics?) is of a finer fabric than everyday, but of the same design. Qui-Gon's tunics for the movie were made of a sort of raw silk. To be fancier than that would be to have a fabric smoother....like a "silky" silk, shiney and smooth. Charmeuse, dupioni, etc.

perhaps it's more as in opposed to the seemingly potato-sack-like material of normal robes it's more elegant. ie: comparing normal bed sheets to a hight thread count egyptian cotton.

Yeah, that was the impression I had from the few references and descriptions in the books. I'm planning on something, but it will be very formal Jedi Healer robes, more for fun then anything else, I've got all this silk sandwashed broadcloth in brown and blues, so, I want to do it for DCon, maybe.

I'd really like to make tunics in duipioni! Not sure I want to spend that kind of money, though. I'm looking at 20 yards of duipioni for my new Prof. McGonagall robe (OT: the sleeves alone will require more than 10 yards!)

Kai, lots of little cartridge pleats? Which robe are you doing this time? Prof. McG has some very cool ones.

Oohhh! I liked that one a lot. Yeah, that sleeve eat's up the fabric. It always cracks me up when I do an 18th cent. and the sleeve ruffle cuffs can take up yards & yards, not to mention the trims! Really cool stuff, there's a new guy at work and we've worked a barter, he's doing me a custom Lightsabre w/ EL blade and he's getting SCAdian garb to replace some of his that he lost in Katrina. I'm replacing Katrina stuff allover the place, the Napoleon that I'm doing is for a Shakespeare Co. in New Orleans to replace some stuff they lost too.
