Daimler Chrysler (I work for a Chrysler Dealer) is also taking donations and matching funds... I don't think they have ever done anything like that before... JCPenney (where I work) has 900 associates affected by the hurricane. 12 stores or distribution centers were also affected. Currently there are still three sores that are closed due to water/fires. Officials have only been able to contact about 54% of the associates. Today is "jeans and tennis shoe" day at work. You can pay $2 to the Hurricane fund and can wear jean and sneakers to work today. JCP is matching all funds 100%.

WOW! I honestly think its amazing at how much people actually care. It means alot to me and my husband knowing we have people who actually care about us. My own parents refused to help me threw this because we are the lucky ones that still have a home. But we are still affected by our every day life. When we ran the day before katrina hit we didn't even know we were going to have a home to return too. We ran to FL first and went to Disney for free and then the next day went to Unervasal just so we could forget about it for a while. And still my parents wouldn't help. Not even an offer. Thats what makes me mad the most, while my husbands family has taken me in till I can fly back home oct 1.

Himiko, I can relate to you. My family isn't much of on. They weren't there for me and when I needed them most, they ignored me but rather wanted to use me. That's messed up. . Gave me no respect but expected me to give it. Isn't there some saying that says 'If you want respect, give it.'? <shrugs> I truly hope your situation with the hurricane gets worked out quickly for you and your insurance will cover all the repair costs for any damage to the home.

Thanks, unfortunatly we dont have insurance sense we had just got there and were startingout. Although we have no damages except by a door that a little water got in but the complex will cover that. Well my father said that I was trying to extort money from them. I never once asked them threw this for money. We have the funds and the navy and his family. But I still feel left out and displaced as it is right now.

Oh, my. The line of mold around the walls of the place looks just awful. Is that going to be able to be cleaned?
I could see your Jedi costume in one of the images past the middle.
The kitchen looks almost normal.

Luckily, we didnt own the place...just renting. We rescued about a truckload of stuff....still not sure if all of it will be able to be cleaned.... but we called the landlord and told her that it was a job for professionals...and that we wouldnt be back. She agreed...and we agreed that she could keep the security deposit.
I am now in Lafayette, La. ; where my wife grew up and I lived here a couple of years ago to teach high school. We have resumed Med-school at one of the LSU hospitals here in town.
The inside of the apartment smelled like being inside a rotten loaf of bread. It was absolutely awful.
Some of my costume pieces looked virtually untouched...were on top of the bed in the spare bedroom..which evidently floated. My tunics and tabbards were ruined, however. They were made of wool, which now I know, is a favorite food of mold/Fungi. After cleaning (they came out quite clean btw) there were huge holes all over them.
Most of our cd's/dvd's came out ok. Our wedding "china" was on top of the fridge...which you can see in one of the pictures that it fell over. The china must have gently sank thru the flood water, because not one dish was broken. XBOX was up high, so it was ok. Water got up to 3 or 4 inches on the TV so it was ruined. My magazines/comics/books were a pile of mush on the floor, but most of my action figures will come out ok, i think.
Thanks for your concerns guys....I'll probably be making a new jedi belt soon. I'll update you on the progress.

OMG....Flashbacks to Ivan.... We are still recovering from him so I know New Orleans will be recovering for a decade...just being in the outermost bands of Katrina, we were emotionally exhausted, Katrina being the 4th one for us in 2 years. I just don't know how you must have felt going back and seeing your apartment.....so glad you are settled and continuing life...... now with all of this experience I think if there is another Ivan and Katrina, I am renting a u-haul and loading up at first notice and heading North.....

Yow, you can really see where the water line is, how far it came up. Definitely worth leaving town for. Very sorry about your losses. I know if Katrina came here the storm surge would do the same where I am.
Those ducks in the later pictures look healthy at least.

I thought that was amazing, but really...all they had to do was find cover and float which is really cool when you think about it....It does look as if maybe someone had been feeding them. I know the Humane Society is there feeding the animals they can't get picked up each time around. I thought that was so smart on their part to load up their vans then feed the ones that have to wait for the next trip....

My sis works in disaster recovery and I know from working with her on occasion that odor damaged item can get sealed in an ozone chamber. That really kills the smell... smoke odor as well as mold. But I also know that ozone can have a negative affect on leather items... such as jedi belts!

I lived near City Park in new orleans....there was a big lake around the art museum at the front of the park, where the ducks and geese lived. I used to take my dog there every morning to chase the ducks. ....he's a sheltie....so he "herds" them around....hilarious...was one of the favorite parts of my day.
