after reading the post on Jedi's and Facial hair i though i might ask what peoples thoughts are about Jedi's and Piercings as in the last few months i've had a few done I've now got 2 rings through my Left nostril and 6mm amethyst plugs in my ears, planning to get my Labret done (just under my lower Lip) i figure that it shouldn't really be an issue as Piercings originate from Tribal customs and i figure that there (given the expanse of the galaxy) would be Jedi from fairly tribal ways of life who still carry there customs on as Jedi's
What do you guys think?

I assume that any Jedi with any markings got them before they were taken to the temple. Barris Offee had tattoos and I suppose she got them as a baby, but I don't know if it's ever stated. But Jedi aren't supposed to have any attachments or possessions, so tribal piercings might be considered one of those. I took my earrings out when I wore my Jedi costume to the premiere, but that was partly because you wouldn't see them under my hair anyway.

Jedi are jedi as a whole, but most still represent their native races, so if the jedi's race had such markings, it's possible that the jedi would continue to wear them as well.

This is a good question for speculation.
On the surface, the movies and books seem to support the idea that Jedi do not have possessions and are not encouraged in such things as adornment and vanity. At first we thought that they all dressed alike, in garb designed to blend in with the common people of most of the galaxy. However, there are a few that dress in much more individualistic manner. I don't know how this squares with the values of fitting in. It seems inconsistant.
Personally, I take off all pieces of jewelry except my wedding ring, though I don't wear much. My Jedi garb is of the traditional "uniform", though.
With Barriss and Luminara as the example, apparently some Jedi wear the traditional markings of their cultures.

Actually from my readings of histories of some of the Jedi ( in RPG books & novels, which are considered official ) a Jedi or Padawan are allowed to have the piercings & tattoos as long as there is cultural or religious meaning to them & not just decoration. I dont have the books with me, but I will look for the passages & get the info to everyone.

ah, the debate about the meaning of "canon" arises. I'll not engage at this time

I like the definitions that JediToren came up with on the Rebel Legion to get away from the whole "canon" business. "Formal" refers to costumes that the general public would recognize from the movies. "Informal" refers to all SW costumes and interpretations of them from all SW media.

How old are Zabrak when they get facial tattoos? Eeth Koth and Agen Kolar both had them, so there must be some freedom of personal appearance choice within the Jedi order. Knights and Masters are free to choose the hair appearance, ie. Mace is bald, Qui-Gon had long hair and a goatee, etc. Why not tattoos and piercings?

There are occassional mentions of cultural markings or whatnot in several of the recent novelisations, those that revolve around the Clone Wars, or in Apprentice or Quest novels....... I'd say better kept to a minimum though.

I take off all jewlery and my watch except my navel peircing which isn't visable when in costume and my medic alert bracelet because its a pain in the backside to take off and put back on again and I need to wear it anyway in case I have an accident.

It seems to me that certain Jedi were "staitioned" in certain systems or planets as Guardians or whatnot. Jedo in such situations would perhaps dress somewhat differently in order to gain acceptance by the culture. Perhaps the examples we see are of such Jedi ? Or perhaps Jedi are occasionally stationed in their own system and at that point will dress, etc. as their culture dictates.?

I think that the variations between Jedi are more due to the cultural background of the individual Jedi. Especially for the non-human Jedi. Some have body types that Human shaped clothes won't fit well on. I wonder if some species have cultural memories from very early ages before they went to the Temple? Requirements for clothes and personal adornment seem to be very loose. Even the more exotic Jedi go for plain colors.
But I wonder why Bariss Offee and Luminara Udali wear black? Is it cultural for them?

I'm thinking of getting my ears pierced again. I just have to decide with ear, right or left or both. So then I'll have 8 in one ear and 7 in the other. or something like that.
