Just thought I would throw this out and see if anyone would be interested.....
I am considering making Jedi costumes for those who either don't want to or can't sew. A lot of people at C2 asked me if I sold them (once they found out I had made ours). So I am trying to find out if anyone would be interested. I wanted to get that info before I started working on details.

::throws self on kees in front of Shoshana:: PLEEEEAAAAASE!!! ::a curtain falls and everyone claps::
Seriously though, I do need a costume. And I'd sew it, but the last time I tried to sew anything... ::points at a mass of tangled thread:: You get the idea.

Hey Shoshana, have you seen the Jedi in the "Ready to G.O." video at www.starwars.com I was talking about? he's got long dark hair, and he's twirling around 2 lightsabers at once. He's got a dark tunic, and light pants. Check it out. And what kind of material do you think that is for the tunic, anyway?

Hey Nick! I couldn't find the video you are referring to, so can you send me the exact URL? Then I'll take a look at that Jedi and see if I can figure out what the tunic material is. I am assuming that's the kind of Jedi outfit you want? Thanks!!

OK, I went and watched WITH MY STOPWATCH, mind you, and this Jedi appears at about 4 minutes, 15 seconds into the video. He's twirling around 2 lightsabers during the segment that focuses on Samuel L Jackson. You can see Eeth Koth and Stass Allie behind him.

It's cool to make costumes Shoshana, just be careful about pricing and stuff like that. A guy is getting sued by Lucas film for mass producing Storm trooper armor. Just don't go to sowing happy and such.

Really?!!! Where did you find that out, I'd like to read up on it. I don't want Lucasfilm coming after me!!
The whole point though is to keep it as cheap as possible. The reason I did my own is because someone wanted $250.00 for just the tunic, undertunic, and pants!! The robe wasn't even included!!

A bunch of guys from the 501st were talking about it. I dont think you'll get in any trouble. as long as you dont mass produce stuff. i'd stick to making costumes for just though who have no sewing capablities..... lol.. which is just about everyone lol...

"She's Baaacck" Hi, my fellow Jedi, hope those of you who went to C2 had a great time. I assume we all loved Ep II! Actually, if it's made properly of good quality fabric, $250 would be about right. I have charged up to $500 for the complete outfit, inner & outer robe or tunic & pants, tabbard, obi sash, and and big hooded outer robe, I don't include leather work such as belts or pouches. But I will gaurantee that they will last a minimum of 5 years if cleaning instrutions are followed. I doubt if Lucasfilm will come after you for making a few for friends, or even several for other people, it's a harder case to prove, as the Jedi, do not have a specific uniform, and could be oriental inspired clothing. The StormTrooper is a very specific recognisable design. Also it helps if you don't call it a Jedi, that is why the McCall's pattern was called Space Family, you could call them Space Knights. 25 years ago, when I worked in the costume rental shop, we had a Black Space Villian, this was of course Darth Vader.

$250... $500?! ::passes out:: Maybe I'll just settle for my old costume, oversized light brown T-shirt and dark khaki (sp?) pants with a lightsaber. (Qui-Gon's color scheme, but you'd have to use ALOT of imagination to see him in that outfit.) At least it was affordable. Which reminds me... isn't the Jedi supposed to be the cheapest SW costume? What happened?

Welocm back Nova!!!! Part of the cost is the choice of fabric Eqin. I was lucky and managed to find a decent fabric for a good price ($2.00 a yard). It's 100% cotton and seems to hold up very well when washed. The robe is what cost me the most ($6.59 a yard, and I needed 10 yeards for each robe). The one thing I DON'T do is pants!!! I'm not that good with my sewing machine yet. However, a pair of Khaki pants seems to work just fine. What I have been thinking of doing is allowing the person who wants the costume to pick out the fabric they want and send it to me, and then I just charge for the labor. I do realize that that could lead to a lot of problems though!

Oh, ok I think I get it now. (You can tell how much I know about this kinda stuff. LOL) So the robe costs about $66 bucks, if I just buy the fabric and saftey-pin it together. ::shakes head:: What fun. And I'm guessing (probably wrong) that with 100% cotton I could pay $20 for tunic, under-tunic, etc? (Good thing I already have the pants, since that's the part you don't do.) Now I just have two questions. How much does 100% cotton shrink? And how far off the price was I?

Hey Nick! I watched the video, and the only thing different about his tunic is the color and the sleeves. Instead of flaring out at the end, they are pretty closely fitted all the way to the wrist. So it should be pretty easy to do.

Just thought I would put my 2 cents worth in this....ooooops ...dropped the 2 cents...it rolled under the computer desk. Oh well....yes, things can get quite expensive even if you sew the costume yourself. I shlepped down to the fabric store the summer of 1999 bent on making an Obi-Wan costume. I figured a few bucks for some fabric and bingo-bango-bongo....costume. Well $80.00 later, I DID walk out of the store. I had never sewed before but since I took my entire 64 GTO apart and put it back together I figured...hey how hard can this be!! If you can follow directions...you can sew!! I don't have a sewing machine so I did it by hand. I bought a McCalls costume pattern called "Space Nomads" that looked kinda like the real thing. I made some freehand "adjustments" to the pattern like flaring the sleeves and shortening the tunic.. it really didn't come out too bad. I have worn it on Halloween, and to Celebration II and a couple other costume events and it has held up well...no runs, no drips, no errors. Good luck whatever you decide!!! I also agree about the pants....you see so little of the pants, there seems to be no reason to spend a lot of time on them.
