I made my annual purchase of Simplicity's Halloween Catalog today and believe it or not, there are patterns that are suitable for begginers that with a few modifications will turn out a pretty decent Jedi.Called "Trilogy Trumpeters #5840 it is a multi-size pattern that can be made from XS-XL 30/32-46/48 and all in between. Contains 2 robe styles, tunic, obi, (what they call shoulder armor) tabard, & a pc to make a fake under tunic (dickey) $15.95 I bought it because I collect patterns, but almost never use them. Another pattern that would work is called "Go Global" #8311 SZ. S 34/36 M 38/40 L 42/44 $10.50 The oriental mens costume would work in differnt fabric, & the robe on the arab man would work w/ a few modifications & a hood. Another is "Trilogy Truobadors" #9887 sz XS-SL $13.95 Robes , Capes & Tunic, w/ a few modificatins this would make some nice robes, or an Anakin style cloak. Of Note: "Lord of Ladies" View A in the right fabrics would make a pretty good "picnic dress" and view B would convert w/ some work into that wonderfully ethnic blue dress Padme wears on Tatooine just before the white jumpsuit, (It might be my favourite Padme costume so far). So, if you want details on the modifications, ask, those of us who sew, will answer, "if knowledge you seek".

I did that, we don't have a pattern thread, I think we need one, there are severalthat will work, and they can be listed and discussed here. Did I err? Sorry if I did, most of the boards I use you just start one when you think it's useful.

I was looking through Simplicity's Halloween Catalog too (in the crafts section of Wal-Mart), and I was just wondering about Trilogy Trumpeters (#5840). Good thing I found this thread, huh?
So you think it'll work? I noticed there's two cloaks, and the guy's has this flap all the way around. So, is the girl's more acurate? And the tabbards they had are attached to the belt, so how would I modify that to get Qui-Gon tabbards?

[glow=navy,2,300]I just happened to use both of those patterns for my costume. (5840, 9887) They came out very well. I used the shoulder armor and tunic from the one pattern (5840) and the cloak from the other because the one that came with 5840 was not-Jedi looking. More of a LOTR deal. So I made the evil looking one, just made some adjustments to the sleeves and it was ready to go. Didn't come out so bad. mine's ALL black though. Everything. It looks good though.
I hit my fabric store about 2 months ago for those patterns. I guess your catelog just came late then?[/glow]

hmmm.... yet another trip to the $%**&&@# fabric store to look for #5840... I am starting to collect the patterns too....you just never know!! Thanks as always Nova... tomorrow I am going to order linen from that on-line fabric store...in eggplant...which looks on-line like a dark brown....but yet the color "eggplant" I thought meant a dark purple.....
Well...it LOOKS chocolate brown on-line anyway...will have my fingers crossed! I am going to that Film Con up in Madison in November and a bunch of the Rebel Legion and Chicago Force will be there.. and would like to have my dark brown version done by then...

I also made my robe from Simplicity #9887...with a few modifications to hood size and sleeve length, it seemed to work pretty well! ;D And good luck to getting the right fabric, Schph!

Schph, that eggplant will be purple or very dark aubergine, it's not brown, that's an industry standard for muddy purple, not the royal shade, but sometimes it will look brown in photos or even black. It will be a shade of dark purple. I messaged youy too!

I will check your message Nova... Glad I didn't order it yet.... Scanned through the rest of the linen at fabric.com... they have a cotton/linen blend there too that looks to have a better color or dark brown...
the blend should be ok, right?
It will be hard to make a choice on-line cause you can't see the stuff...but I don't have a choice at this time...I have found nothing here...
so...my choices are: 100% linen...lightweight, medium weight or heavy weight.... or a 65%cotton/35% linen blend... in light, medium, and heavy weight.... which would you choose Nova? Which flows best, which is easiest to work with by hand?

The cotton/linen blend is probably more durable as well as probably a tighter weave, which should be better for the hand sewing, and will probably flow better and WRINKLE less. I'd go heavy for the robe, they always have a weighty look. If there is a phone # try calling to see if the will send swatches, most places would, sometimes w/ a minimal charge.

Flash, no the catalogue didn't come late, I don't subscribe to it, I just pick it up at the sewing notion shoppers heaven, GREENBERG & HAMMER, but going in there usually costs me a fortune, sewing oddities add up, I buy things there that are hard to find in most places, like steel boning, hooping, special curves, rulers, gadgets, scissors, needles, I'm glad that they're in the opposite direction from where I usually go, or I'd be in trouble.
