In all honesty, when I watched ANH over New Years Eve, we suspect that Obi-Wan knew perfectly well who R2 was, but didn't want to say anything in front of Luke. Also, we realized that the name 'Luke Skywalker' isn't actually spoken untill they rescue Leia from the Death Star's prison. R2 didn't witness Obi-Wan fighting Anakin (or his recreation as Darth Vader) so it's possible he didn't know that they were both the same person.

At the end of Episode III Captain Antilles orders the protocol droid's memory erased- Artoo snickers after hearing that.
Artoo's memory is kept intact- he knows everything. This explains why he knew which way to go to find Obi-Wan on Tattooine in ANH.

This explains why he knew which way to go to find Obi-Wan on Tattooine in ANH. Exactly. I do wonder though, just how much Artoo does know (although his memory is intact). He most likely would not have witnessed Anakin being addressed as Lord Vader, nor did he witness Anakin being placed in the armored suit. Flashing forwards to ANH, if I recall, C-3PO (and possibly Artoo as well) was powered down when Obi-Wan spoke to Luke about Anakin, and as mentioned, the name 'Luke Skywalker' was never mentioned untill they were on the Death Star (Again not in Artoo's presence) Even during the attack on the Death Star, they spoke in 'pilot code', or just called him 'Luke'. I don't think his last name was even spoken in Artoo's presnce untill ESB (and I'm not even positive about that...) so I wonder just how much he did actually know...

I don't think his last name was even spoken in Artoo's presnce untill ESB Well there is at least one instance... End of ANH after the pilot briefing: as Luke walks under his X-Wing and Biggs runs up yelling "Luke! I don't believe it!" Artoo is being raised into Luke's X-Wing in the background... Red Leader interupts Luke and Biggs' reunion by saying " Skywalker! You think you can handle this thing?" But you do make a good point that Artoo may not have known who Luke was before this.

I'd forgotten about that... I recalled the line as "Are you sure you can handle this thing, kid?" but I'm sure you're right. That said, if Artoo was being loaded into the X-Wing, he might've been pre-occupied, or not heard due to the overall noises in the hangar... Of course, it would pretty much've ruined the story if Artoo had actually realized who Luke was and then decided to tell him everything ;D

I think R2 was probably paying more attention then what we all believe

I'm sure Artoo was paying more attention that people attribute to him. Lucas designed his character that way, to be the humble servant who secretly knows all of the answers.
I'm also sure, even in 1977, that Obi-wan knew who Artoo was. NOTHING that old Ben said to Luke regarding the past and his father was straightforward. When Ben said, "Hello there," he probably didn't know this was Anakin's droid, but as soon as Luke said, "He claims to be the property of an Obi-wan Kenobi..." the music changes, Ben nearly collapses, and it's all very clear. The signal has been sent. In hindsight, we know that Ben has likely had spare contact with Bail Organa.
There are too many reaction shots and shared moments between Artoo and Ben (and NOT between Threepio and Ben) to be unintentional.

in the new book trilogy "The Dark Nest" Artoo is discovered to have a walled off memory block that contains tons of data and vids from the Anakin years. HE has kept it hidden from Luke because it fits his protocol of protecting Luke from danger....the truth seems to dangerous to Artoo to share.....we do get to see some of it though.

Well in the Dark Nest series theres a part in one of the books were R2 shows Luke a Recording of Anakin and Padme together. The scene where Anakin mentions that hes not thew Jedi he should be. R2 recorded the whole thing!!!
