There's really no hard-and-fast rule about what to get to make your saber. Do your research, look at as many photos of other people's sabers as you can until you have the basic understanding of what makes up a saber. Read as many lightsaber tutorials in as many websites and forums as you can
Then goto your local hardware shop and just go crazy! Buy anything and everythint you think you can use to make a saber. Start with some lengths of PVC/copper/aluminum tubes of different diameters.
Go home and experiment. Let your imagination run wild!
