To keep the knot from being bulky under the belt, I just use a half knot and add an extra twist - I think it's called a bookbinder's knot. If the tie is made out of a rough fabric, it stays in place fine without being bulky. And the longer ties are easier for me to tuck away. Some of my obis have an open seam for me to tuck them into.
