I was mulling over the curved Obi idea too. I was thinking of curving the part that goes over the hips, while the portions in the front and back of the body are regular size. Light to medium weight iron on interfacing on these parts. No interfacing on the parts that go over hips, to allow for more movement and comfort.Interesting idea for fitting the obi. But perhaps just a simple curved piece of fabric would work just as well?
I was wondering if sewing two pieces of curved fabric would work?
- Take two half-width(plus seam allowances) lengths of fabric that have a gentle curve to them, so that they look a bit like a "(".
- Sew the sides together that are on the inside of the curve of the "("s.
- When you lay it out 'flat' you have an obi that is narrower down the middle than it is on the edges.
- The seam down the middle of the obi would be covered up by the belt.
Like I said, I have a very long waist, so I haven't had much trouble with flat obi's, but if I wanted to wear my obi lower than I usually do I would perhaps try something like this:
- Take two half-width(plus seam allowances) lengths of fabric.
- One length of fabric would be straight.
- One length of fabric would be curved so that it looks a bit like a "(".
- Sew the two pieces together, one straight edge to the inside of the curve of the "(".
- When you lay it out 'flat' you have an obi that is narrower down the middle than it is on one edge.
- The seam down the middle of the obi would be covered up by the belt.
You would have to finish off, hem and fold over the outer edges of the obi to look nice.
